The shuttles svc to Kyoto station is convenient but if you miss it, walking is so easy and safe, anytime of the day to and from hotel to main station. If you have luggage then it's only a few bus stop away once you figure the schedule. The hotel is a short walk to the large Nishi hongwanji Temple, a worthwhile visit that is free. "Our room at Aoi Hotel was very spacious, with a balcony the size of some budget hotel rooms and overlooking the Kamo River. The room gets daily cleaning and restocking, but the reception/concierge is not really present (they can be summoned with a phone call from the front desk). Overall, a unique, high-quality hotel in an excellent location."
