"The property and surrounding areas were beautiful covered in snow during our Winter visit. The hotel provided boots so we could easily get around in the snow. The man who was at the front desk during our stay was knowledgeable of the area and kind. We had two rooms and both were clean and comfortable throughout our stay. "

"Uotoshi Ryokan was amazing! The host was super nice, the meals were fantastic, the room was great. The area is perfect, it's a great place to get away from the city for a bit. It's a bit in the past, but in a really nice way! Our room didn't have a washroom in the room, we didn't mind. "

"The staff was really nice. We got free milk and it was only ¥100 for extra bottles if milk, which are a MUST when taking an onsen. We had a private onsen in our room, but there were also public onsen in the hotel! Everything was super clean and the hotel is located close to the bus-terminal."

"Our stay here was wonderful. Two adults and 2 children in a traditional room. Beautiful onsen area (male/female) which our girls loved. Staff very helpful even though not much English spoken it didn’t cause a problem. Great location to walk into town. My daughter left her iPad in a cupboard and the hotel kindly sent it onto our next location. They went above and beyond. Highly recommended!"

"The hospitality (service and meals) at Shiganoyu Hotel were amazing. While we did not speak Japanese and the staff did not speak English, they used a translation tool for conversation and didn't let that be a barrier. It was so comfortable for our family of 5 - very homey and welcoming. The tea and treat upon check-in was a nice surprise and delicious. The onsen was a relaxing bonus! "Absolutely loved our story here. If you book here, get the Sora room. It is worth it. It has its own private bath and lots of space. We loved it. And the town surrounding, is so cute and fun to walk around. It is a short walk from the bus when you arrive. The staff was so welcoming and sweet. We highly recommend staying here. "

"Staff were friendly with many different nationality so meaning no issues for foreigners to stay in.. The hotel is nicely & newly renovated with Ski lifts just at the side of the hotel. "A great base to visit the snow monkeys. A beautiful and traditional onsen. The breakfast and dinner was served by older ladies that did not necessarily speak English but definitely kept trying to make it an amazing experience each time. The variety of the served food was just overwhelming. So delicious and always something freshly cooked right at your table. An opportunity to stay at traditional Japanese tatami room is a memorable experience. Free pick up from the railway station. "

"What really made our stay special is kindness and attentiveness of the staff. We had large suitcases, and though the train station was a five minute walk, the front desk manager noticed us struggle walking uphill and came to our rescue with a hotel van, loaded and unloaded our bags. The dropoff service was not included, and we did not ask for it. He did it out of compassion and kindness. Very touching. Food was delicious! Do book dinner if its available. We had a traditional tatami room, which was cute, though a bit dated with some tears on the faded couch upholstery. The shower was very small, which is expected. We were lucky to have a private shower as many ryakans make you share. Great experience overall."

"We loved it here. The resort is amazing. The room was a good size. The view was fantastic. Close to the Yubatake, Kusatsu Gate foot bath, restaurants, and markets. They have a free shuttle to the center of town, Yubatake. Also, a shuttle to the bus stop when you go back. Plus, the free big onsen is amazing. You can also use two other hotels' onsens, but Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Resort's is the biggest and nicest. They provide a yukata for use while you're there, which is nice if you want to take pictures outside in a yukata. The staff are all super friendly and nice. We loved this place."

"The area around the property was absolutely beautiful and charming - but maybe because of the time of year we visited (1/06-1/08), very few places were open, despite their signs claiming what their hours of operation were. Even when we found a restaurant that was open at 6pm for dinner, multiple restaurants turned us away because we have a six year old daughter and they didn't accept kids. It was pretty upsetting to my daughter, but the area was absolutely beautiful."

Great hotel in Shibu Onsen

"Loved our stay at Shibu Onsen Kokuya and would highly recommend. They made the trip into the mountains and to see the snow monkeys very easy - with transfers included and bag drop to the station. The traditional dinner and breakfast were a great experience. Also loved the variety of onsen’s available within the hotel itself - and private Onsen with your room if you want! "
