"The dirt road in is probably the roughest/bumpiest drive I’ve had on nz dirt roads. The location is remote and peaceful. Views are scenic and the history of the river and its ‘tide’ was interesting. We had shared amenities which were basic but fit for purpose. The room smelled of damp and walls are absolutely paper thin. We could hear every noise and whisper of our neighbours. The kitchen and shared lounge was fabulous. We enjoyed our stay. "

"So I stayed in a dorm. You are required to sign a sheet that says they aren't responsible for stolen items, however to get to the dorms it's a code that is laminated on the front counter so probably never changes and then there are no locks on the doors and no lockers in the room. They charge you to use the lockers in the small common area. So to me that is wrong to make guest sign something when anyone can walk in and take something of yours as the security is very low. "Unfortunately we could only spend one night here because we left for Franz Joseph the next morning. But, we were delighted when we arrived and saw this beautiful room…amazing view of the lake with floor to ceiling windows, it had a full kitchen, fireplace, living room and dining area. I could stay there for weeks and be happy. Only one downside is the distance from downtown. We took cabs. But, if you like to walk, it’s a lovely one."
