"This hotel was wonderful! Exceeded all expectations! The staff were extremely lovely and helpful. Hotel amenities were awesome. We stayed in a suite in one of the towers, the room was clean, spacious, very comfortable. Amazing shower and high quality bedding. The free snacks/drinks in the cafeteria was an unexpected bonus and the breakfast was incredible! They also had bicycles we borrowed to explore the town and bike around the town walls. From start to finish this was a fantastic experience and I highly recommend this hotel! "

"If you are arriving/departing by train (Lucca) this is an excellent location as Hotel Rex is a couple of minutes walk away. The hotel is also very close to the city's renaissance walls. The hotel has whimsical decorations, a place for children to play, and a good breakfast. A table outside of our room had biscuits on it. I'm pretty sure other rooms had the same treat. Staff were pleasant and friendly. Outside the property was road construction, but it was not noisy. "

"This is a beautiful, wonderful hotel. We stayed in the green room with our two kids. The entire hotel smells amazing and is extremely clean. The beds were by far the most comfortable we had on our weeklong trip to Italy and the decor and setup is perfect. I highly recommend staying here, you won’t be disappointed. "

"Decided to stay here because of the 5 star reviews and wasn’t disappointed. Yes it’s the opposite side of Lucca to the train station and outside the city walls but it was only a 30 minute walk because Lucca is so tiny. Gave me the opportunity to get my bearings. And only a 5 minute walk back to the wall. Was able to check in just after 11am. Room was huge as was the bathroom & both immaculately clean. And there was a kettle! Breakfast was fantastic and laid out with great care. Lovely selection of croissants, fresh fruit, yoghurt, meats & cheese. Though be aware only one cappuccino or other hot drink is included. And you need to pay the city tax in cash."

"This is a truly beautiful house with long views down to Lucca and olive groves all around. It is well-furnished and we slept really soundly. Massimo, the host, is extremely gracious and offers many great ideas for local activities and day trips, and once you find it the local supermarket is very well stocked. Having said all that, there are two "buts" to determine if this is the right fit for you. The key one is that "steep, winding, and narrow road" indicated in some comments is an understatement of the case. If you are not an experienced and confident driver with a relatively small car, you're going to have a challenge. The road goes from one lane to less than one car width, there are no shoulders, and the dropoffs are steep. It is very unlikely that a car service would agree to come pick you up. Issue #2, which is related to that, is that either you cook quite a bit in the well-appointed kitchen or you stay out for lunch and dinner (meaning drive up the hill in the dark). It is a good 20-25 minutes to anywhere and you get to navigate the hill both ways. We would go out for the day, enjoy an Italian lunch, pick up supplies for dinner, and head home to cook and enjoy that. (Issue #3: if you are a crazy cat person, use your common sense and do not feed the feral cats that roam the mountain as the people before us did.) Again, we very much enjoyed our stay once we figured it all out but you need a small car and you better be a good driver."
