"Even with our limited Japanese skills, the staff understood and communicated with us with great ease. Everyone was extremely nice, polite and pleasant. The breakfast and dinner menus were copious, delicious and made with local ingredients. Even a simple tomato could shine with the incredible skills of the chef. Zao onsen has a reputation as a winter resort but we've thoroughly enjoyed hiking the mountain in summer to come back to warm smiles, relaxing sulfuric waters (really helped my skin) and incredible food.
