During the 1790s, James Vann became a Cherokee Indian leader and wealthy businessman. He established the largest and most prosperous plantation in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. In 1804 he completed construction of a beautiful 2 ½-story brick home that was the most elegant in the Cherokee Nation. After Vann was murdered in 1809, his son Joseph inherited the mansion and plantation. Joseph was also a Cherokee leader and became even more wealthy than his father.

In the 1830s almost the entire Cherokee Nation was forced west by state and federal troops on the infamous Trail of Tears. The Vann family lost their elegant home, rebuilding in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma. Today the Vann House survives as Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee Indian home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the house which features beautiful hand carvings, a remarkable “floating” staircase, a 12-foot mantle and fine antiques.

Perfect Little Get Away

"We were welcomed by the gentle sound of the creek and the sweet smells of a clean and cozy cabin. Judy was attentive to all of our needs. The kids loved looking for salamanders and crawfish under rocks by the creek and roasting marshmallows by the camp fire. I loved laying in the hammock reading my book, while my husband fished the creek. On the cold day and night we enjoyed a fire inside nestled on the couch watching one of the hundreds of available movies. The master bath was better than expected. We enjoyed our short drive to Blueridge and Ellijay for horseback riding and shopping. There is much history to learn about in this area and Fort Mountain had one of the most breathtaking overlooks I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend this cabin, my only regret was not booking it for longer. "

Lake Front Cabin - Very Secluded...Serenity lives here!

Great secluded retreat

"We appreciated being able to stay in this cabin. If you are looking for seclusion, it's here! The kitchen was well appointed, and there would be plenty of space for 4-6 people throughout the cabin.The place came stocked with firewood, including kindling which was great because it rained, and plenty of fishing supplies that I didn't get to use unfortunately. The gravel road to the property could be hard to get down with low clearance, and could be rough if conditions are icy. We had a front wheel drive SUV that handled it no problem, even with a ton of rain."

Cozy and quaint

"This property was amazing, and the communication with the host was the best I've ever had, hands down! She even offered early check-in and late check-out, which was much appreciated! It's cozy and quaint, with everything a couple and their furry companions could want. The drive in is a little rough, but totally worth it. The single room cabin is super cozy, and it isn't lacking for anything. The covered front porch was a favorite respite, particularly the swing bed with its own heater and lake view. The attached dog yard is big enough for the canine companions to play, and they can access the porch and the dog yard without having to worry about them getting out (although small dogs can pass through the large wire squares). The large covered outdoor kitchen/dining area was a welcome bonus, and we put it to use grilling meals after a day of gallivanting. The property was meticulously maintained, clean, and we truly enjoyed our stay here! I totally see us coming back to stay here again!"
