It turns out that after intensive inspections after the recent earthquake, the building was determined to be unsafe. There were personal on the scene which transported us to a nearby hotel ( The Palace) which truned out great. It's unfortunate with today's technology that Expedia cannot keep track of people's reservations and inform them of such...

"Las Penas is our go to place whenever we are in Guayaquil, which is several times each year. It's a welcoming property with friendly, helpful staff. It is centrally located in downtown Guayaquil in easy walk to the Malecon, restaurants and other attractions."

"Hotel basically OK. Shower drain partially blocked so had to turn shower off periodically to avoid flooding bathroom floor. One small windown looking out onto a wall 3 feet away in my room. Just did not like the surrounding area much. Did not seem to be any restaurants/bars just fast food vendors."

"The room was spacious and comfortable. One of the reasons I booked this hotel was because it had a pool and a gym. The "pool" was about 8 feet by 12 feet and 1 foot deep there was no way you could swim in it it was not a hot tub. It was dirty and the centre drain had so much suction on it it was painful when I trod on it. It would be dangerous for a child to play in. The surrounding floor was dirty. The gym had a foul smell in the equipment was old with frayed cables and dirty I was completely...
