"The staff get 12 out 10. Choice of different items in buffet are amazing. This is a 4* and they had king prawns on dinner menu on 21st december with the lower rates before Christmas. We are writing this review from a 5* hotel in malindi owned by a large italian chain on christmas eve and there is no dreams of having prawns on menu. Hands down an amazing experience. Only downside is the general cleanliness. The loos near the pool stink really bad "

"It is ideally situated. Easy access to the beach. The main issue with that is that there is a club/bar that runs till late into the night and make it impossible to have a good night sleep. "

"The scenery around the property was very beautiful. Overall the property was what I would consider a little tired. Lots of rooms to maintain and insufficient funds to do so. All inclusive was average to be kind food possibly below average (my fiance suffered from food poisoning after eating fish at lunch on the first day). A property that has a lot of potential but needs a lot of money spending on it."

"Loved the staff and our room was nice and cool. The restaurant Licht Haus was gorgeous and the food was delicious! Also, loved the little shop by the restaurant and we got several lovely pieces of jewelry. I especially loved the humane/gentle way of dealing with little adorable monkeys that like to steal snacks. No weird violent pest control methods that I might see in my home country (the US) and I really appreciated that, and I say that as someone whose chocolate croissant was snatched by a monkey. Don't worry, the monkey left the fruit and my phone! "

"Hemingways Watamu was just what we were looking for in terms of somewhere to relax and rest after an injury and work. Watamu itself is a bit less interesting in the off season (I.e. most restaurants are closed, as are many of the gear shops), but it’s still lovely if not a tad bit windy. Staff were amazing! Highly recommend."

"This was the most magical vacation and guesthouse that we have ever stayed at! The facilities are gorgeous and the staff is so sweet and accommodating (and always available) and we LOVED the big and beautiful pool. I think floating around in the water at night with the palm trees swaying above me was the most magical experience I have ever had. The hotel has wonderful gardens and is situated on a beautiful beach! Concerning the bad reviews- the guesthouse is located in a small town in East Africa and costs under $100 a night for an exotic beachfront guesthouse, I really don't understand why people expect the hotel to be a 5 star resort in California (you want that, you need to expect to pay for it). That means that power is going to go off every now and then (they ALWAYS got it to come back reasonably quickly!), the food is going to be African and take a little while because everything is fresh and often made to order and there may be a few bugs (though we never saw ANY! they were always cleaning and we found everything to be exceptionally clean) I have been a social worker in East Africa for 16 years, and I can say the food is going to be a transition for anyone arriving in the country- it isn't hygiene related, it is just going to be rough for some people who are coming into a new continent with different bacteria. Whenever we host teams, even for the teams that choose to ONLY eat at nice guesthouses and snacks that they brought, people will always get sick. "

"I had booked a room at Mvuvi 5 months ago and was told when I arrived that they had overbooked. I was thrown into a random house in Watamu, dogs running through the room, the person in the next room being violently sick all night. The house wasn’t even on the map so I got very lost late at night trying to find it. Mvuvi must have known about the overbooking months ago, but only told me on my arrival. I had an option of another hotel originally, which I would have obviously taken if I’d have known what would happen in advance. Mvuvi have charged me the full rate for something that was not a hotel - no food, soap etc. and they have not even offered an apology. It’s the second time I’ve had issues booking with them (last time they changed the dates of my stay without telling me) so I will never be staying there again and I strongly encourage people to avoid it as well."
