"I was a bit leery about booking this lodge since i dont usually stay at motels. I booked it because there weren't many options available in waitomo and from what was available, this place had the best rating and looked ok. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised once we checked in. The room was spacious, very clean, had a kitchenette, good size fridge, lots of toiletries. We were able to use the laundry room ($4 NZD per machine). Check in was easy. Very friendly and helpful front desk staff....

"Beautiful location, grounds and cabin. So close to glow worm caves and have their own little glow worm grotto on the property. Only a 60 second walk from the cabins. Also close to a waterfall and black sand beach. Angus was such a gracious host who made sure we had everything we needed including toast jams and coffee. "Welcoming host and comfortable stay. The room we stayed in was a bit small with 2 twins, but the aircon worked well, and the studio was very clean. My friend also lost her passport on the property and the host went out of her way to mail it at our next destination. She was very kind and responsive. Would highly recommend if you need a place to stay in this area. The price was amazing and it also included a great breakfast! "

On the long drive between the Coromandel and New Plymouth I saw a sign for "Hobbit filming location" in Piopio. Swinging a right off the main road, 15km later through the most beautiful farmland and some gravel roads and I arrive at Hairy Feet Waitomo, a farm where the troll scenes from the Hobbit were shot. Getting to explore the farm with Suzy the owner was an incredible experience, not to mention seeing the exact spots where scenes were filmed. So glad I followed my instincts and turned right!
