"I loved staying at this hostel, as it had an awesome vibe. The hostel and town were like something out of Totoro. It is a nice quaint area and the hostel embodies this. The staff and owner bent over backwards to make us feel welcome. It was during the world cup, so they put all the games up on a projector. "This was the first time my best friend Lina and I had stayed at a ryokan, and although it was a perfect trip overall, the only difficult part was walking up the hill to the ryokan with our luggage. The staff were very kind, and the two breakfasts and two dinners, each featuring exquisite delicacies, left us in awe every time. The temperature of the hot spring water was just right and gentle. What truly moved us, however, happened after we had checked out. While we were waiting in line at the Yufuin Station, the ryokan owner hurried toward us and handed me my sunglasses. The truth is, I had left the sunglasses behind, thinking they were too old to keep. The owner had noticed I had left them and retrieved them while cleaning. We were so touched that we almost cried. We will definitely recommend this place to our friends and family, and we are already planning our next visit. Arigatou gozaimasu!"

"Beautiful, modern, very tastefully decorated property. The front desk attendee was very hospitable, a warm welcome to our first time in Yufuin! Gems is a minute walk from the station / bus stop, and is located centrally to Yufuin town. The walk to Kinrin lake was beautiful, with views of the mountain on the street. The room we booked was incredibly spacious, and although designed for 4, did not feel too empty for 2. The bathroom is so well done and so clean, with a huge bath tub that just invites a private soak. We would stay again next time! "

"I love the traditional tatami rooms here. The ‘Bekkan’ is an annex and based in an older building that is charmingly done. It has its own baths, but you have access to the bigger and outdoor baths at the main building a block away. We hadn’t ticked the dinner box when reserving. Dining options in this town may be somewhat limited as most onsen inns serve meals inside. The restaurants fill up. We ordered the dinner when we arrived. It is a bit pricey, but is a all you can eat buffet with Japanese, Chinese and som western options. The drinks are included as well. The rooms were authentic and the baths excellent. This whole town is duper charming and fun to explore. "

"The two of us stayed at ryokan Reimei at the end of March and we booked the reimei room with an open bath. We had the best experience ever. We could go in for a dip whenever we felt like it. The shower is on the outside with the open bath and the coldness of the weather wasn’t a problem for us since the water of the shower was quite warm and you jump into the onsen right after… (I see lots of comments complaining about that). Dinner/breakfast service time and shuttle bus leaving time was chosen at checkin, we could choose between the times that were convenient for us. The dinner and breakfast were not true kaiseki but it was still delicious and fulfilling. We also brought some pudding from downtown before going to our ryokan and I definitely recommend doing that as there’s no dessert component in the dinner kaiseki. This is not our first ryokan and having an open air bath definitely made the experience 10000 times better!!! We will definitely choose the same room again if we’re coming back to yufuin!! "
