Oze Iwakura is one of the largest ski resorts in the Kanto area with 16 courses, 9 lifts + 1 gondola, and 697 meters (2,286 ft) of vertical descent. It's said to be best suited for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, but there are several courses for advanced and beginners, too. It's not as crowded as other more popular ski resorts and because there are so many advanced skiers, we had a great time snowboarding down several courses and didn't have a any trouble getting around. Location: Gunma prefecture Best to come by car, it's a 2-3 hr drive from Tokyo. (Parking on weekends are free if you have more than 4 people in the car!) Or you can come by shinkansen, closest station is Numata Station on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line, then another 50min by bus.

"Staying at Nikko Cottage Fu-Sha was a highlight of our trip to Japan. Yoshiko-san treated us as family members coming home for a visit. She picked us up from the train station, spent the evening chatting in Japanese with my teenager, helped us figure out our transportation to Kyoto, and met us at Nikko station with our luggage when it was time for us to depart. "
