As an Expedia Gold member, I have always appreciated the benefits that the program advertises, including complimentary room upgrades, VIP perks, and flexible customer service support. However, during a recent trip, I encountered an unexpected situation where these benefits were not honored, leading to a frustrating experience.
I booked a stay at a highly-rated hotel listed as a “VIP Access” property on Expedia, specifically to take advantage of the advertised Gold perks. According to the membership benefits, I was eligible for a complimentary room upgrade and other exclusive services at check-in including free breakfast. However, upon arrival at the hotel, I was immediately informed by the front desk staff that no upgrades were available, despite the hotel not appearing fully booked. I asked if there were any other perks for Expedia Gold members, but the staff seemed unfamiliar with the program entirely.
To compound the issue, the “VIP Access” welcome gift—a small but thoughtful token I had enjoyed at other hotels—was nowhere to be found except for 1 welcome drink voucher. When I inquired, the staff shrugged and said they were not aware of any such policy. I showed them Expedia’s website, which clearly listed their property as a VIP Access participant, but they brushed it off, citing a lack of communication between Expedia and their management.
The lack of transparency left me feeling misled. I paid a premium receiving a standard stay disregarding my loyalty status.
