Extra Info:
Hotel Central Background

In 1931, the monumental Hotel Central was built opposite the station in Tilburg in Art Deco style by architect Casper Melchior Balthasar van den Beld. Before that time, this location housed the café-restaurant Albert Janssen.

During World War I, Theo van Doesburg was stationed as a sergeant-postman on the Regte Heide between Tilburg and the Belgian border. The café-restaurant of Albert Janssen served as a meeting place for Van Doesburg and his artistic friends who organized sensational Dadaist 'soirees intimes' there. It was also here that preliminary ideas were formulated for a new magazine (De Stijl) which would mark the beginning of the art movement De Stijl, founded in 1917 in Leiden. The contours of this avant-garde movement were sketched in pencil at this location on Spoorlaan in Tilburg.

As a tribute to the spirit of innovation of that time, during the renovation of Hotel Central in 2023, it was decided to name each of the 21 rooms after an artist associated with De Stijl or a Dada artist.

In the person of Theo van Doesburg (who wrote Dadaist poems under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset), De Stijl and the experimental and absurdist Dadaism come together. Both art movements, which were a response to World War I and the new era that began with the 20th century, were diametrically opposed to each other.

Each of the 21 rooms in Hotel Central has received unique wall coverings featuring specific accents and/or quotes from the respective artist, writer, or architect.

Room 17 Theo van Doesburg Room (Utrecht 1883 - Davos 1931)
With its geometric and diagonal planes, the design of Van Doesburg for L'Aubette in Strasbourg is the radiant heart of the room named after him. The quote as a frieze against the ceiling is a citation from a letter by Theo van Doesburg to his close friend Antony Kok, in which he reminisces about his love for his second wife, Lena Milius.

At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Van Doesburg was quartered near Tilburg on the Regte Heide at the Belgian border. The horrific eyewitness accounts from Belgian refugees deeply shocked him, and he lost all his faith in humanity and even in the religion as he knew it. His old friend, Maurits Manheim, introduced him in the autumn of 1914 to Antony Kok from Rotterdam. Manheim, Kok, and Van Doesburg organized so-called soirées intimes at the beginning of 1915, featuring music and experimental poems. With Kok, he also discussed the possibilities of a literary-cultural magazine. (The later magazine De Stijl, which was launched in Leiden in 1917)

The Tilburg period is a footnote in the history of the driven and tireless stormer of heavens Theo van Doesburg. He traveled all over Europe to present his views on the new era and what the meaning of formal language and aesthetics should be.

This apartment is ideally located for exploring Tilburg and the surrounding areas. Within walking distance, you’ll find activities like laser tag, go-karting, escape rooms, mini-golf, bowling, and a cozy cinema. For music lovers, Poppodium 013 regularly hosts concerts, and for a relaxing stroll, the nearby city park is perfect.

By car, you can reach the Efteling theme park, Safaripark Beekse Bergen, LaTrappe Brewery, and the Drunense Duinen in just 15 minutes.
