Good location poor sanitation
Great location and view of the water in this old hotel with poor plumbing (used toilet paper cannot be flushed and is put in a small garbage can beside the toilet). Breakfast (1 croissant and 1 coffee) served in bistro around the corner from the hotel. Staff didn't know name of bistro (Anglo Snack). Reception staff (owner?) sitting in a darkened area behind a high counter in the front area of this first floor walk up was not a welcoming sight.

Poor provincial hotel
Had booked and paid for 3 rooms but reception staff attempted to reduce this to 2 for no valid reason. Car parking for whole of island is restricted to residents for whole of 24 hours. They did have 2 places immediately outside the hotel which were used by members of staff. There were no catering faciliities of any kind. Breakfasts, a croissant and a cup of coffee were available at a cafe half a mile away from the hotel. Orange juice etc were available at extra cost. No drinking glasses were provided. As 3 star hotel facilities were poor to non existant

Could not leave fast enough.
This is the first time I have ever walked out of a room. Not a vacation spot for sure. If you like dark shaddy places this is it.

Great location
Despite booking the night before, when we arrived they told us the hotel was full so were offered a couple of rooms that weren't in use at that point. Picked a large, sea-facing room on the top floor with no en-suite and what turned out to be non-operational air-con. However, the price was consequently reduced from the original booking. The bathroom was in need of some TLC (lots of hot water though) but we survived quite happily without air-con despite the hot weather. The staff were great, didn't try the breakfast at the cafe down the road but the shop on the corner near the front door was great. It is a grand old Palazzo, in need of money spending on it but I thought it was a great place to stay for the price. I'd go back there if I was to stay in Ortigia again but stay in one of the best rooms.

Better places to go to!
Good location and full of promise but there was no parking, breakfast was not in the hotel but across town in a bar. The bathroom was dirty and poorly maintained. Mould was growing on the wall around the aircon unit and the floor had not been cleaned for some time. A real shame as the building could be so much more with a little effort.

Dissapointed travellers
Ortegia is a wonderful place with plenty to see and do. The hotel was disappointing as it really needed some TLC and thought. It had tired charm because of the architecture, however the room had a wall light that fell down on minimum contact. Shower head bracket was broken. Mould on the walls and a deep layer of dust under the bed. There was no where comfortable to sit other than on the bed. The balcony had great views, but the wrought iron balustrade was rusting badly and the outer shutters were in such bad condition that they were starting to collapse. The fridge in the room was not working and guests were obliged to use a communal fridge in the corridor. Should a guest need to store medicines or specialised food it was not ideal.

Aurora Glory
A 30min walk from train station so no need for expensive taxi and located in a wonderful corner of Ortyga. My top floor room was a glorious high ceilinged classic bedroom with tall double doors to a small balcony with wonderful sea views from the bed. Good bathroom and plenty of hot water. Only criticism would be the noisy Ortyga traffic - absurd 4x4's, growling monster motor bikes, buzzy scooters and stinky diesels. When I was staying the hotel had subcontracted the included continental breakfast to a nice enough bar in Archimedes square. Recommended.

Why is it given a 3 star rating?
Having just finished a stay at a 3 star hotel in Taormina, the Aurora was a bit of a shock. Run down and scruffy, on the first floor ,3 fights of stairs, of a very dilapidated building. The first room we were allocated smelt very odd and the wardrobe was full of old bedding. We changed it. I think we were the only guests and if we hadn't already paid we would have left. There are no eating or drinking facilities, you are issued vouchers for a local cafe, a good 5 minute walk away.

Dirty, old, and lacking but great location!
This hotel hasn't been updated or maintained at all in the past 5-6 years. I stayed here in 2006 and it was charming and quaint, so I decided to stay again... This time it was horribly dirty. Everything was covered in a layer of dust, we looked under the bed and were disgusted: piles of dirt, lint, and dust bunnies. Shower was covered in mold and grime and the water didn't drain. Our room was large and antique and had a great partial sea view, and the fact that it was old and not really kept up didn't bother us really... it was actually kind of fun to be in such an old palazzo with so much character. The location is great, and Ortigia is such a magical place that nothing could have ruined our vacation. But this place is dirty. Honestly, I am much cleaner when I go camping. The dirtiness is what will keep me from staying at this hotel in the future, and what makes me want to tell everyone to run far away from this place!

Great location and view, but run down & overpriced
Our room had a great view across the ocean and the hotel is in a good location, but given the price we felt it was poor value for money. The hotel is quite run down and a bit shabby although the staff were friendly and helpful. If it was less expensive I'd be happy to recommend it as we enjoyed our stay, but I expected more for what we paid.

Great location
The converted palazzo has seen better days, but it still loaded with charm. The service was friendly, though not quite as helpful as some previous reviews had suggested. The room was comfortable, but the bathroom left a bit to be desired. The shower curtain was in desperate need of cleaning or replacement. Any shortcomings, however, are made up for by the amazing location of this hotel: a quiet neighborhood with views of the sea. Ortigia is definitely the place to stay when visiting Syracusa, and this hotel was within easy walking distance of all the sites there. Even the archaeological sites and museum in Syracusa proper, as well as the catacombs of S. Giovanni, are only a 20-30 minute walk. Breakfast was not served at the hotel itself, but at a cafe in the nearby Piazza Aretusa with its beautiful fountain as a backdrop.

Beutiful spot, unique hotel.. bad breakfast
We enjoyed our 3 nights at this hotel with a seaside view. The room had lots of character, and when we checked in, the receptionist gave us a very detailed explanation of where to eat, what to see, and mapped it all for us - super helpful! She told us about a bar/restaurant with a happy hour deal and we were totaly hooked up with 5 plates of food and 2 drinks for 5 euro each! Crazy. What was frustrating was that there was no tp or soap in our room when we arrived, and after requesting both, we got only the tp.. never any soap. The room had a jacuzzi which had promise, but jets didnt function. The breakfast was at a cafe down the road with awful service - coffee was ok but we were offered only industrial/not fresh reheated croissants which we had to wait about 10min for each morning and servers were very unfriendly and even brusque with us! We went to the cafe next door across from the fountain in Piazza Archimede on the last day to avoid this frustration and the people there were nice and pastries were amazing! Hotel Aurora, please change to that cafe!

The hotel is quite old fashioned, but clean and the staff were actually amazing. They even took us out with them to experience the festival of fish. As with most hotels in Sicily the breakfasts aren't up to much.

Lovely building but no maitenance for years means its falling to pieces. The shower didn't work, the toilet seat fell off in my hand, there were no shades on the lamps near the bed. The breakfast was poor and the coffee undrinkable. Very disappointing the building looked great from the outside.

A lovely palace well positioned for exploring the old city. We had a fine room. Understandably there was no lift and we changed rooms to avoid climbing higher. The supply of hot water was erratic, especially in the shower. The hotel has an environmental policy re towels and the use of water which was a plus for us. Quite noisy.

Not recommended - poor value for money
I had specifically booked a double room with sea view but on arrival I got a small room with no view (I suspect they had offered my booked room to other guests). My complaints did not help. The room was very worn down and the shower cabinet dirty and appaling. The shower was falling apart. The reception was not manned at night time and there was no fire escape plan or route. There is no elevator. Although described in the prospect the room did not have a minibar. Siracusa and especially Ortigia is a very nice place but to fully enjoy it I recommend to book another hotel, preferably a 4 star hotel.

very old building, on the water, view to east
The gentleman at reception was very helpful and even was able to upgrade our room upon my request. The booking site advertised this hotel as having a view toward the sea, which it does, but they don't tell you that, besides facing the sea, it is also above a very busy, major thoroughfare of Ortigia. Although Ortigia is quaint and characteristic, it is also very busy with lots of traffic. This hotel is located on the sunrise side of the island, while the nicer side of the island is on the west, toward the sunset (e.g. where the Fontana Artusia is located). The hotel was supposed to serve breakfast, but they told us there was a problem with their kitchen, so they sent us, with vouchers, to "Cafe Centrale" on the Piazza Archimedes, about a 5 min. walk away. We didn't mind the walk, but that Cafe isn't particularly good. The hotel is in a very old building, which with some restoration, could have been quite lovely. Instead it is a little shabby, the art work on the walls is shlocky and cheap looking, and the dining rooms are painted a very garish bright blue which doesn't keep with an "old building" style. They provide wifi, but only in some public areas, such as in the lobby next to the reception desk. We could not get wifi in our room. There was a good supply of hot water in the shower, but the shower stall was sort of falling apart as it had very decrepit sliders on the bottom. The location was very good for the price, and Jonny (the day-time reception person) was very nice and helpful. I would recommend this hotel for short stays in Ortigia at a budget price. But if you absolutely must have internet in your room, you may want to think about investing in a "chiavetta" , that is, a "dongle," a USB device that you can buy from an italian phone store such as TIM or others. It usually comes with about 100 hrs or more (for a limited number of months) of internet access and you can use it anywhere, no wifi needed. But you may want to have your laptop with you when you buy it, as it is tricky inserting the SIM card into the device. We needed extensive internet access, as my husband teaches courses online.

nice location, the hotel needs some update.
beautiful view if you get the room with the sea view, do not get the parzial view, you won't be able to see the water! the hotel it's old, some of the rooms, the one on the upper floor, are newer, but all the bathrooms don't work too well,it's either the shower or the toilet, or the sink, so be prepared.... ortigia is one of the most beautil place you will ever see and the location of the hotel is great. keep in mind if you get the room with the seaview that it's going to be noisy especially during the week end, this is because the main road is by the sea. breakfast is decent, boiled eggs, limited amount of cold cuts and only chese singles, no espresso or cappuccino, just regular coffee, but the the fresh pastry are GREAT! it's an ok place after all, kind of overpriced for what you get. you can find better deal in Ortigia, but the fact that the hotel is in an old, or antique building, it's nice. remember no elevator and the rooms are on the second and third floor.

Excellent location & service in a character hotel
This hotel is in an excellent location, on the sea front, in a really lovely unspoiled part of Sicily - Ortigia. You feel as though you are living in the old home of a wealthy person from times gone by - full of character and atmosphere - thankfully, no one has modernised it. The service from the reception staff, who are fluent English speakers, is absolutely 5* and adds to the enjoyment of staying in this hotel. The hotel even provides an interesting tour of Ortigia, with one of the receptionists, for 5 Euros. Highly recommend ths hotel.
