"It’s quite unfortunate that Palácio das Especiarias was my first stopover in Portugal, because no other hotel after this has been good enough for me. Apart from its own unique charm, this hotel appears to spare no effort in hosting its guests with great generosity and goodwill. The two Carla’s are infectious with their cheerfulness, can-do attitude, humor and kindness and they set this tone throughout the hotel to make it a most pleasant and memorable stay."

"The property is located about 15 minute walk from Rato metro station on flat incline — the sidewalks are cobbled so need to watch your step. A negative to the place is the lack of lighting in the stairwell and entrance lobby to building; the stairs are darker wood and hard to negotiate with the curve without good lighting. The place next door is undergoing renovations so noisy from that aspect but can’t be helped. The breakfast is adequate with same selections daily with a rotation of bread...

"Property was very beautiful. They switched my room to an apartment on the ground floor which was very damp and smelled a little mildewy. There was a dehumidifier in the bathroom, but it wasn’t adequate. Room was still very damp."

"I really liked this hostel. My room had a small balcony with a nice view. Its close to the old part of the city which makes it easy to explore. Each bed had a curtain which gave some privacy. I only wish they had more charging outlets in the room. "
