We took the train from Colombo to Hikkaduwa, and then took a tuk-tuk to our hotel. The taxi only cost 300 Rupees, but if you're feeling adventurous it can be walked on either the road or along the beach in under an hour. The hotel is small with only 4 rooms, but is perfect for someone looking for a quiet and relaxing stay. It is located at the end of Hikkaduwa beach, so there are not many people around.
We stayed in the 'Elephant Room' located upstairs. It had a nice bed, A/C, and a nice bathroom. The balcony also overlooked the courtyard and faced the beach. The complimentary breakfast was always good. Fresh fruit, tea & coffee, and then various main items that the manager made sure to ask if we would want the day before. No lunch or dinner options here, but there are many places to eat close-by. Walking down the beach there are many small and family restaurants that are very inexpensive and delicious. There is a large hotel next door that also serves more international foods, but we learned that it is very expensive, so I would stick to the local foods. There are also shops around for groceries, or a tuk-tuk is always nearby directly out the front door. The beach is large out front, but the water is a little rough in this area. To truly go swimming, you will need to walk a few minutes down the beach.
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel to the traveler seeking a more peaceful stay.
