The real Greece.
If you want to really experience Greece this is a perfect location. A car is pritty well essential as it is, situated on a dusty rough road, which winds it's way through an olive grove to a private beach. We were often the only ones on the sandy beach and the few free sun loungers were often available to enhance our enjoyment. The sea was magnificent, crystal clear and off a gently shelving safe beach. Waking for a couple of miles along the waters edge we saw no other human. It felt like a dessert islands at times as we watched the flotillas sail by and saw the larger boats drift silently past in their way to the mainland, which provided us with a picturesque back drop.
The area immediately outside the apartments had been picked of the regular flotsam but it was a shame to see somewhere so beautiful damaged by the plastic debris that littered the wider beach.
The apartment was clean but very basic and for the first week this added to the authentic feel of the place but a comfortable bed was something I was desperate for by the end of the 10 days. The kitchen had just one burner and feeding four wasn't easy. The hum of the fridge and the whir of the fan which stood instead of air con became a little wearing.
The lean cats and kittens were also fun to get to know, but the twilight bark of the dogs did on one occasion annoy.
The local town of Leffimki was quinitcential Greece, with ramshackle stone houses snuggling alongside more prestigious modern builds.
Produce could be bought from the farmer out of the flat bed waggon that parked on the edge of the road. Although the well stocked supermarkets just out of town proved a more realistic option for a family of 4. Lidel was cheep and carried a good range of Greek produce so we didn't have to feel that we had sold out. The open storm drains on the road side and the narrow ancient streets made driving in town a slow and steady.
The town of Corfu offered two lovely days out but the Achilleion palace with its beautiful proportions and sad but romantic story captured my heart.
Seeing beautiful birds on Lake K and watching the sunset over the sea virtually alone, provided memories to treasure for ever.
Advice. Take mosquito repellant and possible ear plugs if the above would annoy. But this would also block out the unusual nocturnal bird songs which were delightful.
