"If you do not care for cleanliness, if you do not care being waked up at 06:50 by the landlady having some workers cutting metal on her demand 10m away from your bedroom - oh sorry they stopped for 20mn when I asked if it was really necessary - then this hostal is for you. "Great few days spent here! I recommend staying 2-3 nights... depending on when you arrive, because I highly recommend Semuc Champey and the bat caves (Grutas de Lanquin) which are hard to do in the same day. El Retiro made meals and excursions very worry-free. My only negatives would be the lack of hot water and the cleanliness of the bed, room. It wasn’t very dirty... just wasn’t very clean. Overall a very enjoyable few days spent in Lanquin."

"I expected this place to be basic and the two staff running the place were lovely and it is close to Semuc, about an hour’s walk. But it was a challenging place to stay. There is literally nowhere to put your stuff - no shelves, no hooks, no mirror. Food was bad, no tortillas, no plantains, no cheese. No purified water forcing you to buy plastic bottles in the rainforest. Also they will pick you up at Lanquín and bring you to property but charge you to return and increase the agreed price once...
