HWA needs repair
Room was old & needed renovation. Kettle was broken, washer was broken, dead fruit flies on kitchen counter.

We were disappointed that this room did not have laundry facilities, as promised. This made the stay inconvenient for us. We requested the same room as received on a previous stay that did include laundry facilities but did not receive it.

The washing machines still exist!
My 2nd long stay (2 months) at this apartment hotel and in general, I am very pleased. You do have to insist on things from the staff. When we came we asked for a room with a washing machine, and were told the rooms did not have washing machines. When we told them we had stayed before and knew there was a washing machine, they gave us the room. The WIFI was also out, but we bought a cheap router from the 6th floor, and that fixed it. We also bought a rice cooker/hot plate and used them for cooking. In terms of grocery/convenience stores, there is a Watson's on the 3rd floor of the same building. There is also a V and Go store in the basement of a nearby mall. You can also take a longer walk down to the Xuanwumen stop where there is an upscale BHG mart in the SOGO mall. Lots of expat products in there. I used the pool and gym almost everyday. It is mostly basic stuff, but it is good enough, and is mostly empty, so you usually have the pool to yourself. The 8th floor has a huge food court and is still a fun place to eat in a pinch. You have to get a pre-charged food card from a counter at the center. The rooms are generally a bit dated, but workable. The level of cleaning is more to the standard of a serviced apartment than hotel. This place is recommend for a family stay, and people already familiar with Beijing, but it can also be a way to get a more authentic China experience and "home like" feel. It is certainly a great value, so go ahead, and give the HWA a try! :)

Good hotel in good location. No English spoken here. You need good Chinese language skills to communicate with the personnel. You only need to be proficient in Mandarin to have a quality stay (this can be learnt in 3 months time, so you need to plan your stay in advance)

This hotel is barely satisfactory. The concioerge is useless unless you have strong Mandarin skills - no one speaks or reads English. On check in they could not understand our Hotels.com booking for about 30 mins and the wrong size vehicle was booked by the hotel for our trip back to the airport resulting in children sitting on laps etc. The hotel room kitchen is largely useless as the utensils and crockery etc that you would expect were not provided or parts were missing. This hotel is 2 star and I would not recommend for a Western family.

convenient location and excellent value for money
I used accommodation for a stop-over, and this was very well located to allow a quick evening walk to Forbidden City and T Square. Apartment room had a pleasant feel, good space and comfort (though kitchen cupboards were essentially empty). Overall a very pleasant stay, followed by a mere 30+ min taxi trip to Capital Airport.

Lovely garden, nice apartment, but ...
I've enjoyed visiting the Xidan neighborhood in the past and thought I'd try staying. Never thought about this, but the one drawback is that there don't seem to be any convenient grocery stores around - not even convenience stores. There is one store in the basement of the Xidan Department Store but its pretty minimal. The store in the basement of the Parkson Department Store is good, but its a long walk, or crowded subway for one stop, or taxi ride, away. The hotel/apartment is very close to the Xidan subway station - too bad the subway is so packed these days. The garden on the roof is great.

VERY convenient location
As other reviews have stated. VERY convenient location. Heaps of options for food; close to subway. Great for travelling with kids; room for playing inside apartment. Pool superb. No charges for use of pool, gym etc. High speed internet in room and free of charge. Laundry VERY expensive. Worst point (although a petty one) not many staff to help with interpreting addresses for taxis.

Beijing HWA Apartment Hotel
Hotel staff friendly. No proper lobby. Room is big and clean. They supply towels, toileteries and bathrobes. All rooms in 9,10, 11th floor. Free Beijing map available in the room. But the map is not not uptodate. But might be facing other highrise buildings with no good view. Beds are comfortable. Wireless internet. Very big old TV in the room. You get a headache after watching it. TV in the sitting area is ok. Only English TV channel available is CNN. There's a French Channel Monde. Lots of Chinese channels. One Chinese movie channel got old English movies during night time. Room was cold. No heaters or air conditioning in the room. Central Heater has been switched off. Unlike other apartment hotels, no free drinking water, black tea or coffee available. Only Ju Hua flower tea available. Mini Bar expensive. There's a fridge, microwave and washing machine. Unlike the apartment hotel we stayed in Shanghai which was much cheaper and in good condition than this one, there's no washing powder, pots/pans, kinves in this hotel. two plates and spoons and forks available. Gas oven not working. Shower head not working properly, so difficult to get a good shower. Ther's a bath tub but not very deep. OK if you are very slim. Hotel staff will not find a taxi for you. Very difficult to get Taxi to the airport as there are a lot of illegal non Taxi vehicles with brokers claiming high fees controlling around the area. Near to shopping areas, Mc donalds, KFC. Convenient to Xidan and Hu tong subway, aound 8 to10 minutes. Direct line to Tian A men and Summer palace. Need to change subway if you want to go to Airpiort, Olympic Park or Beijing North railway station to Great wall. Have to walk long distances inside the subway if need to change subway line. No escalators and can't use lifts unless you are in a wheel chair. Difficult to get taxi to the airport. Very difficult to get Taxi to the airport as there are a lot of illegal non Taxi vehicles with brokers caliming high fees, controlling the Taxi service around the hotel area and some of the sceneic spots.Illegal taxi drove us a long way to Zi jin park instead of Summer park. Then he wanted us to buy 70 RMB boat ticket/ per person from there to Summer park so he can get a comission from the lady at the ticket counter. Somehow we managed to find a bus which cost only 1 RMB as we can speak Chinese.

Beijing HWA Apartment Hotel
Spent 5 nights here in December 2011. It was great for our needs (two families travelling together). We booked 1 x 1 bedroom suite and 1 x 2 bedroom suite but actually were given 1 x 2 bedroom and 1 x larger 2 bedroom (with 2 bathrooms). This hotel is not really set up for foreign visitors, more for business people from elsewhere in China. There was one English-speaker on reception during the day, but communication was more difficult at night. Lots of drawing and pointing required! Example: Communal laundry was handy but I had to take photo on my phone of slots on washer and dryer so that staff knew I needed to purchase laundry tokens! Staff were however friendly and always tried to help. Staff were able to write out addresses in Chinese for taxi drivers. Complimentary wired and wireless Internet were available in each room. Good signal and reliable (apart from the "Great Firewall of China" restricts access to some sites of course). The kitchen was stocked with a minimum of plates, cutlery etc although I believe it may have been possible to borrow more from housekeeping. Staff got us a taxi to take us to Wal-Mart to get western and Asian foods and other items. The neighbourhood was very commercial. The hotel is in the same complex as a department store with an upmarket mall across the street (Joy City Mall) and a more basic mall just behind the hotel. The neighbourhood had enough western fast food choices to keep tired Canadian kids happy. However, we were clearly the only western visitors in the area (we travelled in December). The hotel was only 300-400m from the nearest subway, which gave us easy access to Tiananmen, Beijing Zoo etc. The only downsides were: - Lack of English speakers on the night shift (a bit of a problem when I plugged in a western electrical adaptor at 2am and blew every fuse in the room)! - Kitchen was understocked with utensils etc for a family of 4 - Swimming pool looked fine but was very cold (in December). Should have guessed it was going to be cold when we saw the pool attendant was wearing his overcoat! - Cleaning was so-so. Areas under furniture and some shelves clearly had not been dusted for a long time, but there was nothing gross. - We had one very hard bed, but the others were up to western standards. Overall the value for money was great in terms of the space and the convenient location in Xidan. If you like hotels with more facilities then this might not be the place for you.

Stayed for 1 Month+ and Would Stay Again
I stayed at this apartment hotel for more than a month and have no complaints. It seems like this hotel is from the 90s but they are renovating. They brought in a new flat screen TV and put down new carpets in the halls while I was there. They also gave me a free upgrade to an apartment that had 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms, washing machine, and city view. If you take the elevator to the 8th floor there is an arcade and food court that is hard to beat on value, and I think would be a great place to take restless kids. The gym was small but had all I needed, and was mostly empty. There is only a fee for ping pong and billiards, the rest is free. McDonalds is just outside the building down some steps. The smell of McDonalds was often in the elevators. ;) Pick up some Chinese, though some of the staff speaks English and you could also mostly get by with the rest. One hitch was that to turn the cooking gas on the stoves on it would cost 100RMB (~$17 USD) a day extra, so I made do with the microwave, and also a friend brought a hot plate. You could probably buy a hot plate for ~$200 RMB in the 1st-3rd floors of the building which is one big mall. Watson Pharmacy is also on the 3rd floor and has all you could need. Basically, I would stay at this place again. The location in terms of neighborhood and subway is great, and the fact that it is also in a mall with shopping and food court right there is also great. It is a value hard to beat.

Beijing HWA Hard to beat deal in good location
First you can't beat the price. You get a two bedroom suite with a full kitchen for a rate less than most moderately priced hotels. The location is convienent to shopping, the subway and pretty much anything else you might be looking for. Though most of the staff does not speak english they were still very helpful and made us feel very comfortable. Not many frills but clean and plenty of room.

Great place and price, poor service
This is a corporate (Huawei phone corporation) apartment building that appears to mainly cater to it's own corporate employees. So when a couple of Americans walked in claiming to have a reservation caused a flurry of confusion and activity only to be told we had no reservation. Fortunately there was printer nearby that allowed us to show we had reserved and paid. A great location, very nice small apartment at a good price but a desperate level of service as no one at the front desk speaks English. The place is hard to find as the location on the map is slightly off. It is directly across from Joy City Shopping Center- it is as simple as that.

The hotel location is great and the best part is availability of food joints 24 hours and also the proximity to some shopping areas. Tianmmen square and forbidden city is a 20 min walk from the hotel. It could be better maintained for sure and they would benefit if they have more English speaking staff there.

BEIJING HWA APARTMENTS - VERY SATISFACTORY
Location is Excellent, Subway in either direction is no more than 5 minutes walk, Bus stops at corner. Taxi collection out front but are selective if they take you on short journeys, found we paid double to tripple to get to locations due to carrying too much luggage to make it worth their while but still cheap to us. Basic Kitchen with little appliances, nice large fridge and large pantry and cupboard space, ready for upgrading due to cracks, mould (age), bathroom much the same. Beds very comfortable and large, curtaining is great so if you with to sleep in it is very dark that you can easily think its night. There is an inroom safe that makes things easy to keep at hand and secure. Room service daily but only provide you with Green Tea no normal tea or coffee but we were there for a long duration so had to do groceries anyway. Plenty of shopping next door and many levels upstairs to keep you occupied for hours. Many food outlets around the hotel and across the road - street eateries also have variety. There was no currency conversion as advertised and pool was emptied of water, massage and sauna was not locatable and with the language barrier they did not know what we were after so sometimes made things a little difficult and frustrating but they are very accomodating and try hard to satisfy so overall we were very satisfied with our stay of 20 days.

basic furniture. Not enough kitchenware if you are really planning to cook. would need to by a knife and decent size pan and pot or even a Wok. Heating unit was very noisy and they were doing some kind of construction for several hours a day. Very irritating Grocery store in walking distance was nice and many places to choose from for meals.

Not for western coffee drinkers
This hotel does not provide coffee/coffee maker in the rooms for coffee drinkers. There is a washer in the bathroom, but no no small travel-sized detergent package provided. If needed, you have to buy detergent in undergroud Xidan shopping center. A lot of taxi drivers are reluctant to take customer to this hotel area because of the traffic.

Beautiful and spacious, perfect for a longer stay
We were thrilled with the room, especially the laundry machine in the bathroom (we had a regular business suite), and the large soft! bed (a rarity in China). There was also a dvd player in the room which was great, the concierge was extremely helpful although their English was limited. For reference, the pool is 20rmb for use and when we visited it it was quite cool, so that was a bit of a disappointment. But overall the hotel was a great value for the price and a great location.

Excellent location Fantastic space
The hotel is excellently located for the airport shuttle bus and the subway. The living space is enormous for the price and the staff are courteous and polite. Food and transport are cheap but bring your own laptop if you want internet access. You won't find an internet cafe and the price in the hotel is high. Staff don't speak very good English except for one young fellow who was very helpful. I would certainly recommend this hotel.
