Eating out nearby: This part of Catalonia is widely renowned for its good food and wines. There are many great restaurants in the area from the cheap and cheerful pizza parlours to the michelin starred gourmet restaurants. All have the same thing in common they are all extremely good value for your money. If cooking is your passion, then local raw ingredients are fantastic with fresh fish and shellfish, vegetables, fruit, breads and cheeses available locally in the market on a daily basis. There are a number of local vineyards only too happy for you to share their knowledge and taste their wines. All in all this part of the relatively undiscovered Spain is a feast for all your senses.
How to get here: Lots of people drive their own cars from mainland Euopean countries or the UK and Ireland. Begur is about an hour south of the French border and approx 90 min from Perpignan easily accessible on the AP7. It is also approx 90 min North of Barcelona. If driving is not an option then Girona is the nearest airport serviced by Ryanair (45 min) who also fly to Perpignan and Reus. Barcelona is a hub airport with numerous international connections and a number of low cost carriers including Easyjet, Spanair, etc.
We have a detailed directions sheet available for people staying and if you do get lost or run into problems we will be here to advise.
We can also arrange for you to be collected from the airport if you wish.
What is there to do nearby?: Begur is a medieval village with lots of character at the base of the castle ramparts. There are no high rise buildings or tacky mass developments The centre of the village is pedestrianised and a maze of charming narrow streets with some fascinating architecture. There are many wonderful restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. There are lots of small shops and boutiques in the centre of the village near the church square. This square tends to be the focal point for entertainment in the evenings with many artisan markets, art festivals, sardanas dancing and children activity programmes running all summer. In the local park ,which is just around the corner from the villa, there are facilities for both smaller children and teenagers alike.
Of course the local beaches have to be the biggest natural facility we have. Sa Riera is just at the bottom of the hill above the villa and nearby Aigua Blava, Sa Tuna, Aigua Freda and Pals mean you are spoilt for choice.
Golf, cycling, riding and walking: For the golfer there are a number of local courses within a very short distance. At Pals there are two good courses and at Emporda one of the best courses in Spain. There is no shortage of choice in this region with courses to suit all levels from the most challenging to the more forgiving. It is up to you. Club hire is available in most places and it is relatively easy to organise tee times.
There is a very friendly English speaking golf society locally if you wish to take part in any of their competitions that is easily arranged.
This area has a large number of well mapped and signposted designated walking and cycling paths. We can arrange hire of mountain bikes for you by the day or by the week. Discover the hidden Catalonia off the beaten track through tiny medieval villages, vinyards and fields of wild lfowers, rice, wheat and sunflowers. Heaven on earth!
We can arrange riding for you or simply a quiet hack along one of the beaches, through the forest tracks or countryside.
Food and Wine:
This area is renowned for its great food and wine.
El Bulli was best Restaurant in the World for many years and during that time many young chefs worked in their kitchen. There are now a number of wonderful restaurants in Catalonia owned and run by these former students of Ardrian Ferran.
Apart from these 'top end' places (which if you ask David or Phil Fleming about they will be happy to fill you in) local Catalan food is excellent. Prices are exceptionally reasonable and a basic 10/15€ menu del dia can be a fantastic culinary experience.
The local markets have wonderful fresh fish, shellfish, vegetables and fruit if you wish to dine at home or take a picnic to the beach.
Wine here is also great with a wide variety of styles and prices. Cava tasting is a must!
Activities for children: The local autority in Begur and in fact most of Catalonia are very aware that a happy child on holiday is the key to happy parents.
Almost every evening throughout the summer there will be something for children to do in Begur between 7 and 9 pm. Of course that doesn't mean your children have to go home at that time. In fact most Spanish families are only thinking of coming out at that time. Restaurants are used to children dining with their parents at any time of the night and children are welcome everywhere.
At the park in Begur there are bouncy castles inflated from 6pm, there is usually some 'activities' in the church square and on some evenings dancing for all ages from 8 to 80! Good fun for all the family.
