"We heard great reviews for this hotel from friends in Manado, so we booked a room for our stay. I’m giving five stars because I believe my friends. However, a volcano meant that our flight turned around 30 minutes before we were supposed to land in Manado. We couldn’t use our reservation. I wrote to Expedia and the hotel to cancel the reservation. Expedia said they couldn’t refund the money because they needed to first receive the consent of the hotel and the hotel didn’t respond the hotel...

"The villa we booked was not available when we arrived. I had booked and paid months earlier and was extremely upset. The gave us a new duplex which smelt of cement and the shower flooded. The TV was not connected. We got the villa the next day and the TV channels were all Chinese channels. The floor was mopped with a dirty mop as you could see the marks on the bathroom floor. "We had the king bed with partial sea view on the 6th floor. Check in was flawless because they allowed us to store our luggage before 2pm. They took our luggages to the room and gave us the key when we got there late in the evening. The room is spacious with extra day bed by the big window. When we woke up in the AM and let the sun in then we spotted the dirtiness in the room. Big mirror smeared with sticky fingerprints everywhere, under the bed was extremely dusty and dirty, the mini fridge...

"Room was clean and comfortable, with a good bathroom, but a view only to the building wall next door. Breakfast was disappointing and not very appetising. Dinner was ok but misswording of the offer available at the time meant too much food was brought and we were overcharged, though the staff were kind enough to correct this after some explaining. The wifi stopped working unfortunately. The location was good for the immigration office but otherwise a long walk or taxi ride to the centre."

"I made a booking for a 3 night stay at Travello. Hotel service: We're served with melon drinks the moment we got in. Service was warm and friendly. The hotel staff remembered us clearly. Get away to trendy Surakarta! Enjoy the culture, castle, and musicals.

At the museum no photos are allowed which is really unfortunate as it was well worth the visit and the guided tour is definitely not to be missed. In the museum there are even Batik made from the Dutch era which depicts stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White!

I enjoyed the tour v much and at the end of the tour we were brought to this room where the artisan were working on hand drawn batik.

Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia for anyone interested in learning more about the process of batik making.

Firstly, a cloth is washed, soaked and beaten with a large mallet. Patterns are drawn with pencil and later redrawn using hot wax, usually made from a mixture of paraffin or bees wax, sometimes mixed with plant resins, which functions as a dye-resist. The wax can be applied with a variety of tools. A pen-like instrument called a canting (IPA: [tʃantiŋ], sometimes spelled with old Dutch orthography tjanting) is the most common. A canting is made from a small copper reservoir with a spout on a wooden handle. The reservoir holds the resist which flows through the spout, creating dots and lines as it moves. For larger patterns, a stiff brush may be used. Alternatively, a copper block stamp called a cap (IPA: [tʃap]; old spelling tjap) is used to cover large areas more efficiently.

After the cloth is dry, the resist is removed by scraping or boiling the cloth. The areas treated with resist keep their original color; when the resist is removed the contrast between the dyed and undyed areas forms the pattern. This process is repeated as many times as the number of colors desired.

The most traditional type of batik, called batik tulis (written batik), is drawn using only the canting. The cloth need to be drawn on both sides and dipped in a dye bath three to four times. The whole process may take up to a year; it yields considerably finer patterns than stamped batik.
