Very relaxing stay in a period style farm house. The homeowner’s art is displayed throughout his house and took us a few minutes to acclimate to his style but was very comfortable during our stay.
Classic, well maintained farm house with an eclectic modern art collection. Good base of operations from which to explore local restaurants and towns and explore the Shenandoah National Park.
We had an excellent stay. The farm is nestled in the most beautiful landscape and down the street from great food and drink. The house itself was incredibly clean and full of beautiful art.
The house and property are beautiful and so peaceful! Only 5 minites to Sperryville and 20 minutes to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive! The beds were so comfy, the kitchen well stocked, and the furniture was classic. The art everywhere is thought provoking and intriguing! We loved our stay at Jonathan's house!
I’ve never been so pleasantly surprised by a property! Absolutely stunning land with multiple hangout spots atop a little hill with Mountain View’s either direction, by the stream or on the hammock in the large screened in porch. Less than 10 min from all that Sperryville has to offer. Will definitely be staying here again soon!
My husband and I were looking for a quiet get away with our dogs and this was the place for us. The property is in a beautiful setting and very private. We so enjoyed walking around the property and along the stream. John keeps the house immaculate and is attentive to guests needs. The location is perfect for being near hiking and wineries. We look forward to a future stay.
This was the perfect place for my family to celebrate my wife's birthday. The house has a ton of old charm with a unique style and flair. My daughters loved the library, the art, and the creek. Close to hiking at Old Rag, wineries, orchards, markets and dining in Sperryville. John was a very thoughtful and responsive property manager. Book it!
This is our second time to stay at Walnut Hill, and it is an amazing property--our teenage boys and dog are outside all day, and it is close to Sperryville and great hiking. It is in wonderful shape--the pictures describe it perfectly, and it is always perfectly clean. We've stayed in other places in the area, and this is one of the very, very best! If you're considering it, I say book it as soon as you can! We'll definitely be back!
The four of us came to John's place with different needs: the kids wanted open space to fly a little plane they received at Christmas, my husband wanted to be close enough to a coffee shop and I wanted hilly open space and a house with charm.
Incredibly we all found what we were looking for. It was the perfect spot for us.
We also highly appreciated John's overall kindness and ways of communication.
This 1880 farmhouse was a perfect getaway. The farm is close to several wineries, Shenandoah National Park and 80 miles from Washington D.C. We spent most of our mornings on the large screened in porch drinking coffee while listening to the exchange of songs sung by the native birds. The house is well preserved with original wavy glass windows and hardwood floors throughout. If you are a chef or strive to be, the kitchen is well stocked with just about every utensil you can imagine. Sleeping was not an issue with the lullaby of crickets in a beautiful, comfortable bed. Great communication with the host. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Looking for a quiet place for a weekend in Sperryville? This could be the place. Farm house with lots of natural light and screened in back porch for relaxing.
We very much enjoyed our time here. The bedrooms are very comfortable. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots, pans, etc for home cooking. We spent most of our time on the screened-in porch and outside - the farm land is large and there are lots of long walks to be had, lots of places for naps on blankets, lots of stars! We went into Shenandoah NP a few times - to skyline drive but also to hikes from the park boundary. Communication with John was wonderful. Rooms as shown in pictures; TV is in the kitchen.
My husband and I spent 8 nights at the farm with our dogs. We wanted some space where we could spread out to work and also enjoy breaks together. We started each morning with a stroll around the beautiful property. There are some nice trails through the surrounding hills but bring farm boots to safely navigate thistles. We saw a skunk, a buck, and a fox during our walks. The house is tidy and the beds are very comfortable. John is a communicative host who wanted to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Sperryville was an unexpected treat. We discovered Susan’s gym and yoga studio later in our week and made daily runs to the corner store. A hike in the national park is also a must!
As city dwellers we wanted to experience a countryside getaway, as an alternative to our usual Chesapeake Bay Eastern Shore vacations.
The property was secluded and very private, much to our liking. Everything in the house was clean and in working order. The house itself is decorated with a mixture of antique furniture and interesting contemporary art pieces. The property grounds presented a delightful opportunity to experience amateur hiking, birdwatching and communing with nature. If you are an amateur astronomer, the open sky and lack of artificial lights presents a golden opportunity for celestial exploration. The screened-in terrace with rocking chairs and a hammock was perfect for lounging and resting. The wicker chairs on the hill offer a beautiful view and a place for reflection. The nearby creek grew to a soft roar in a storm that took place during our stay. A beaver visited the barn, and birds and butterflies were abundant. The property is close to the Shenandoah National Park and within 40 min of the breathtaking Luray Caverns. Art, coffee, brewery nearby completed the vacation experience. We experienced for the first time communication using the new SpaceX Starlink satellite internet service. We thoroughly enjoyed the relationship with nature in this well preserved 140 year old farm house.
We were looking for somewhere near DC that would allow us to escape the city with our two dogs, and this property was great! Interesting artwork throughout, tons of room to wander, and Dennis was very communicative. Couldn't have been happier with our stay.
Property was beautiful and house was charming, clean and comfortable. Kids had a blast exploring the barn and playing by the creek. The town of Sperryville (only 3 miles down the road) was a nice surprise for us, great food, coffee and market. Location was perfect for day trips into Shenandoah for hiking.
The property is in beautiful countryside and offers complete privacy. We found it a serene change from our normal urban environment. Our dog had acres to roam in and enjoyed it as much as we did.
The kitchen is well-equipped. We prepared Thanksgiving dinner there with no problem.
John was very responsive and helpful.
Note: there is no cell phone service, but there is a landline. And there is wifi
Beautiful spot tucked away off the road with trees and stream nearby. Quaint farm house with basic but interesting decor. Well stocked kitchen which made cooking easy. Also had and nice sheets and towels. The floors were very clean, which we very much appreciated since we don't wear shoes indoors. It was very quiet and a pleasant place to stay. Near the national park for hiking and a few other towns for food needs. It also nice place to ride your bike with beautiful countryside charm, steep uphills but fun down hills.
Very comfortable for family of 3. Well-equipped kitchen, which was important to us. Excellent hiking nearby. Looks fancier in photos than in reality, but that's not a negative. One tiny suggestion: more towel hooks in the bathroom would be welcome.
We didn't realize there wasn't AC throughout the whole house, but the weekend we stayed was cooler, which helped. Our dog doesn't sleep well in the heat, so we got lucky.
We loved the quiet. The kitchen house had everything we needed. Dog roamed everywhere and loved it.
