The views over Applethwaite Common and up to Froswick and Ill Bell are stunning. It is an example of a linear settlement of medieval origin with original drinking troughs visible along the road. Townend (National Trust), a traditional Lake District farmhouse, is a short walk away and there are wonderful longer walks from the village including over Wansfell to Ambleside. Holehird Gardens are just two miles away, website info here - www.holehirdgardens.org.uk.The village boasts two excellent hostelries, both of which serve delicious food. An addition to the village delights is the shop and tearoom just round the corner from Granary Cottage.
