I stayed two nights at Quest Whangarei over a weekend (Friday-Sunday) for a conference I was attending. The hotel itself is well-located, and the room was clean and in mostly good condition.
Checking in was difficult due to the intercom being on a noisy road corner, and so checking in after-hours (reception hours are extremely limited, due to Covid) was hard as it was difficult to hear the person on the other end.
The worst part of this hotel is the noise that comes from a nearby nightclub on the weekends. The first night was ok, but the Saturday night was unbearable - hours of incessant bass speaker noise (from about 10pm) that reverberated through the floor/walls of my room into the early hours - even earplugs were no use.
After not being able to sleep due to the noise, I called the after-hours reception twice - the first time (11.30pm) I was told there was no better room to be moved to, and the second (12.30am) I was moved to a room in a different part of the hotel - and charged $50 for the privilege! I was told that was the cost of laundering the additional linen, however this was extremely disappointing as for the price of these rooms, I would expect a hotel room that was quiet enough to be able to sleep in.
To the hotel's credit, after challenging the fee I was eventually refunded, but this left a poor impression.
This would be a perfectly fine hotel for a weeknight stay, but I would avoid staying here on weekends due to the noise alone.
