Wonderful
This was our second stay at Bob and Melissa's and it did not disappoint. They are great hosts and very friendly to be around. The location itself is great, very close to Asheville and easy access to the Parkway! Couldn't recommend this place more, we love our visits here.

Hey Bob, Margaret and I just wanted to thank you for a terrific stay. The serenity and seclusion of your place is very special. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet, and appreciated your kind hosting. I've already recommended your place to friends and family!

Larry and I would like to say thanks to Bob and Melissa for making our stay a wonderful one. They both are very nice and the cabin was very clean and were so nice to let us bring our 2 miniature schnauzers. They loved taking the nature walks along the property. We hope we get to come back again sometime in the future.

Wilderness
I stayed at Wilderness Retreat because they were Pet Friendly. My wife Ann and my dog Rusty and our son Jeff all found the property to be as advertized. We had a great stay and wish we could have been able to stay longer. Thanks to Bob and Melissa for being such great hosts.

Exceeded Expectations
We stayed here for two nights and definitely plan on coming back for more! We didn't have 4WD so got a ride up the mountain with Bob. The views were so beautiful and Burt the Emu was so great that we stayed up there until we had to leave. Bob was the most wonderful and accommodating host. If you're looking to relax and enjoy nature, stay here! We can't wait to come back!

Just Loved the Experience
We loved this cabin in the sky. We were traveling from Florida back to Ohio, and truly appreciated our respite from the long drive. We enjoyed our walks along the mountain tops and our walk down the mountain. Good news we had a ride to get back up. The cabin was lovely, updated, and of course just gorgeous views. Tell Bert we said Hi! See you soon. Serene and Randy. PS: Loved the closeness to the Biltmore.

Magical Vacation!
The Wilderness Retreat was an absolute dream vacation for our family. We arrived at the top of the mountain and discovered a wondrous views and hikes at our doorstep! Our original plan was to spend the bulk of our time in Asheville, but we never wanted to leave our mountaintop retreat. We enjoyed all of the hikes around the property--with Rocky and Otis (Bob and Melissa's loving dogs) at our side. Our children fell in love with Bert the Emu! Bob and Melissa are gracious hosts that are always around to offer advice or help out. I recommend a stay here with the highest degree of enthusiasm--it is awesome!

Amazing stay!
My boyfriend and I rented this property for a few days as a celebration of my recent graduation from university. It was absolutely astounding! The property is breathtaking and the views are incredible... We didn't want to leave! From the moment we arrived Bob treated us with the best hospitality and agreed to drive us up and down the mountain whenever we wanted. The hammocks, hot tub, and trails all around the property just enhance your staying experience. We will definitely be back and look forward to our next stay here - hoping we can meet Bert the Emu next time! It is everything you could imagine of a perfect mountain getaway. Thank you!!

Breathtaking!!!
This cabin is truly an island in the sky!! Absolutely breathtaking views, quiet and tranquil setting, and very relaxing!! Bob is very nice and accommodating, and had a ton of good suggestions for our stay. You definitely will need at least AWD to get up the mountain but Bob will absolutely take you up and down if you don't have it. The cabin itself is very clean, comfortable, and up-to-date. The location is perfect to explore the mountains, blue ridge parkway, and visit Asheville/surrounding towns. It was a very dog friendly area, so don't hesitate to bring your pup!! We will absolutely be returning to this cabin as soon as possible!!

Can't beat an Island in the Sky!
This place is awesome, plain and simple. The views are amazing (porch faces Smoky Mtn National park), the mountain is peaceful, quiet and beautiful. The cabins are great, my girlfriend and I loved our private cabin; great for families and groups as well since there are multiple levels. Bob is super accommodating and friendly. If you don't have 4WD he'll drive you to and from the cabin and works around your schedule. Bob has great stories to tell and is a very interesting guy who is fun to talk to. You're less than 20 min from Asheville, the BRP, Tennessee, the French Broad river. The location is great for being out in the mountains yet close enough to everything else at the same time. Thank you Bob, we had an amazing time!!! - Michael & Sarah (Tallahassee, FL)

Wilderness Retreat Excellent choice
A special thanks to Bob and Melissa for making our stay this fall a memorable one. Thier accommodating nature and friendliness was noticeable from the begining of our communication during the reservation process. Simple, straighforward, reservation rates with no hidden fees made this an easy choice and overdelivered on our expectations with the property location and views. We brought our close friends from Long Island, NY down for a long wekend after a tumultuous week following this years hurricane and was exactly what they needed to relax and be thankful for what they have and forget about what they have lost. Our dog especially enjoyed the mountain air and vast property with the hiking trails and with became friendly with Bert, Otis and Rocky. Thanks again for a great experience and we will more than likely be back sometime in the Spring. Patrick

The property was beautiful! The views were breathtaking!
My husband and I recently went for a weekend getaway and it was very peaceful! The cabin was in great shape and the property was easy to navigate. I was under the impression it was a cabin all by itself. When we arrived I noticed a cabin underneath ours and another one next door. All cabins were booked for the weekend. The other attendees were nice but I would've liked something a little more private. All in all the town wasn't too far and our dog had plenty of space to run and play. It was enjoyable but not as private as what we anticipated. Defiantly need a four wheel drive car to get up the mountain. And make sure you have ALL of your groceries so you are not up and down the mountain your entire trip.

Perfect Mountain Getaway
My boyfriend and I stayed here for MLK weekend and it was wonderful. The kitchen was fully equipped with cooking supplies, which was nice since we made our own breakfast everyday. This is a quiet, solicited location in the mountains of North Carolina. You will need a four-wheel drive car to get up to the mountain.* The place had everything we needed: HD Cable TV, fireplace and space heaters for our comfort, an amazing view, and a hot tub (which was breathtaking at night with the stars overhead). Bob was an amazing host. He had plenty of suggestions for places to eat and where to go in downtown Asheville, which was very helpful given our limited time in NC. The only thing we needed was hangers and an iron and Bob even went out of his way and actually bought these items for us at the store. Thank you Bob for your hospitality and kindness. I would recommend this place to those looking for a getaway from everyday life, you won't regret it.

Beautiful, cozy, friendly
We enjoyed our stay minus the weather (it rained a lot). Bob and Melissa are very friendly and resourceful, and they had plenty of pets to keep our two-year-old son entertained:) The views are beautiful and the cabin is cozy and has everything needed for a good vacation without extra expenses. To get to the top is a sort of hard, but Bob drove up and down all the time without any problem.Actually, we enjoyed that part, since it was a great opportunity to chat with Bob and get some tips on what to do and where to eat and get things locally, The only downside was that most windows were not screened. I like to keep the windows open to get the fresh air in, but I got all kinds of bugs and moth together with it. Other than that, we loved everything about our stay at the Wilderness Retreat and recommend staying at Bob and Melissa's to all our friends (we live not too far from Asheville, so it is a popular destination from here).

Amazing view, close proximity to downtown Asheville
We stayed here for 4 nights, and lucked out with some unusually warm weather for early November. Everyone is right about needing a 4x4 vehicle to get up and down that mountain. That was one heck of a climb to get to the top. I do think they could do some grating to make the trek a little smoother. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible. The house was a little smaller/older (furniture well worn, doors that need painting) than we had anticipated, but we knew we'd be out most of the day so it suited it's purpose. We did have an issue with the cleanliness of the house, thankfully Kristen did work with us on that; whenever I rent a house I assume the house will be appropriately cleaned before a new guest arrives. Overall our stay was fine, and Kristen and Bob are very nice people, but I think if we come back to Asheville we will look for a newer, more modern rental property.

Beautiful view, great getaway, will definitely be back
This is such a charming little property. From the dogs running around to the hot tub overlooking the mountain. Robert was a great host and was SO helpful getting up and down the mountain/recommending some good places to eat! Perfect location, about 15-20 mins from downtown Asheville. We will absolutely be visiting again. It was perfect for a romantic getaway with my girlfriend!

Not so private getaway
My husband and I booked a long weekend for our honeymoon. Granted we did not read all the reviews before booking, but when we saw 5 stars it was a quick decision after seeing the pictures as well! The views are beautiful and being on top of a mountain was pretty cool. 4 wheel drive is a must as some of the road is on a very steep incline! The location in proximity to Asheville and the Biltmore were also very convenient. The only things we were not pleased with is that there are people who live here that have 3 dogs that are left out to roam. Our dogs aren’t necessarily unfriendly but I didn’t feel comfortable letting them off the leash. While the location is secluded you really don’t have the place entirely to yourself. The kitchen is small and workable but not fully equipped. Overall we had a good time but it wasn’t exactly what we had imagined the place to be.

Quiet, but a little different
I thoroughly enjoyed staying with Bob and Melissa. They are both wonderful hosts and make sure the guest have what they need and also are available for any issues during the stay which was great also. I arrive down there by myself, so it worked out great to not be completely alone until my boyfriend came up in a few days. I enjoyed talking with Bob and Melissa and they told me some great spots to trail walk and eat in Weaversville. The hot tub is actually on the other side and more remote; that table on the front is top there currently. We stayed on the top floor which was great for what we needed. The view was amazing; a nice size room with a king bed and a gas fireplace heater. Then there is a quaint little kitchen with a open space to a couch and a table. The couches were so comfy that on rainy days I would open up the blinds and view the mountains and either watch a movie or read my book. The hammock needs work in the front, but I brought a blanket and read my book on a lovely hill next to the cabin. I very much did enjoy my time there and my dogs were happy to explore around the mountains. Yes you can bring dogs! The other thing is there are other dogs on the property, but they are all very friendly. Enjoy your stay!

Beautiful views and a lovely place to stay
My husband and I spent this weekend here and had a lovely time. This one bedroom had everything we needed plus a hot tub with a view that is amazing. I would highly recommend this rental. Please, though, pay attention to the requirement for a 4wd vehicle....the road up the mountain is a private road that winds and turns and is very steep...Rob and Melissa are great hosts and lovely people!

Peaceful paradise!
My daughter and I spent a wonderful extended weekend up in the beautiful and peaceful island in the sky! The view was gorgeous and the temperature was cooler at that altitude so we did not need air conditioning. The hot tub was relaxing! We do not have a 4 wheel drive but our hosts were always available when we needed a ride up or down. Very conveniently located a short distance from Asheville!

Amazing views. Great hospitality. Can't beat it.
My girlfriend and I have visited Bob and Melissa's place three times now. We come every year toward the end of April/beginning of May and plan to continue that tradition. Bob, Melissa, and Bob's daughter Kristen are all amazing hosts. The views are second to none, as the two cabins look directly toward the Smokies. The top of the mountain is so peaceful and secluded. We honestly enjoy it more every time we come. You're within 15 minutes of downtown Asheville, the Parkway, and the Tennessee border. The location, the cabins themselves, and the mountain are all great.
