Brooke Cottage, Great Walsingham, Norfolk

Brooke Cottage in Walsingham was voted as number one in a top 20 countdown of Cosy UK Cottages for a Winter Break by The Guardian Travel, 2022. Everything you could imagine in a traditional old Norfolk cottage, Brooke Cottage boasts many charming features, including a huge inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove, pine latched doors, a brass bed and views over the village green.

Upon entering the cottage, you are welcomed into a quaint sitting/ dining area featuring original oak beams and impressive inglenook fireplace. Nestled here is a wood burning stove and two sumptuous armchairs - perfect for those chilly evenings. A charming window seat invites you to recline and read a book as you enjoy the glow of the fire. The dining area offers seating for four guests around an attractive farmhouse table. Continue through to the good-sized family room which provides further seating, including a comfortable sofa-bed, gathered around an electric wood burning style fire. Hunker down together and watch a film on the Freeview enabled television after an exciting day spent exploring the big outdoors. The traditional cottage kitchen features painted stone walls, pamment flooring and bespoke fitted units with wooden work-tops. Well-equipped and with plenty of worktop space, this is the ideal place for any enthusiastic chefs to rustle up a delicious meal made from some of the delectable local produce the area has to offer. A WC and utility room are also found on this floor. Steep Norfolk winder stairs lead up to the first floor. The stunning master bedroom with beamed apex ceiling hosts a brass king-size bed situated in front of double aspect windows viewing the village green and lane. This room is served by an en suite shower room. The second bedroom provides twin beds with views of the village green. A bathroom is also situated on this floor. Outside, to the rear of the cottage is a shared courtyard area plus a private area of enclosed lawn, though this is not fully secure for dogs. Parking is available outside the cottage on the green. Bikes can be stored in the garden shed.

The cottage is situated in a peaceful and pretty area on a quiet country lane. The River Stiffkey runs through the village. There is a ford to drive through, or an alternative route if you wish! The popular coastal resort of Wells-next-the-Sea with its independent shops, cafes, restaurants, fabulous Quay and stunning beach is a few minutes' drive away.

Cute cottage
Lovely cottage clean easy parking good location very pretty villages nearby good for dog walks one down side Garden not secure so if you have dogs you can’t just let them out into the garden on there own so late night and early morning toilet visits are a bit of a pain

Brooke Cottage
Lovely old cottage in a fab location for touring Norfolk. The cottage has all you need for a relaxing stay. Very comfortable beds. Low door frames but you soon learn to duck! Handy location for little Walsingham which has a great farm shop.

Lovely village
Lovely village and good location, but not the most comfortable of places for four adults. Furniture needs upgrading and bathroom facilities not great, but we enjoyed our stay nevertheless.

Peace and quiet
The perfect place to unwind. Our only complaint was the heating was not on when we arrived so it was chilly and not very welcoming. Once it warmed up everything was great and it has been unseasonably cold.

satisfactory
A lovely little cottage in beautiful situation. Will come again. We had dogs so a small gate on the back garden would be better to stop the dogs going into neighbours' areas.

Brooke Cottage stay
Great location for exploring! The cottage, whilst very pretty, is a little tired. A few things need fixing up. - The front gate is almost off. - The front path could do with some gravel, else you walk mud in. - The utility door won't close. -The 2nd bedroom window catch is broken. - The shower head needs a descale. We also hadn't appreciated the garden was separate, in that we wanted to let the dog out for a quick wee in the morning without getting dressed. But this wasn't possible because of the shared courtyard (which is a bit untidy), and no gate on the 'garden' for the cottage. - DVDs missing from cases (Peter Kay) For myself, I would add a larger TV and more comfortable armchairs. On the plus side, the bed wss extremely comfy! I wanted to take it home! The water and heating were nice and hot, the kitchen was well equipped and the location was great.

Brooke cottage…stunning property that I wish I owned!
A lovely, quirky cottage, with low, low door frames and the narrowest staircase known to man, but a beautiful place to stay and use as a base to explore the area. Other than a tiny TV to watch England beat Wales in the 6 Nations, we have no complaints, anc would happily return!

Holiday at Brooke Cottage.
V compact cottage. Arrival was delayed due to storm Eunice so arrived Sunday along with storm Franklin. V ill fitting front door with huge drafts. Husband cut his head twice knocking into low door frames (kitchen and backdoor) There are warning signs but faded and not padded. Fridge has a shelf missing over salad drawer and dinky freezer in fridge. Bathroom chilly as no heater in there upstairs twin bedroom has window stay laying on sill. Needs some general TLC Despite the above cottage provided a wood burner which was our saving grace! Great location .

A Long Weekend Break
A beautiful quirky cottage enjoyed over a long weekend to celebrate mum’s birthday. On arrival the owners had left a bottle of fizz & a card welcoming our stay (they also popped by to drop off some new flutes). Cottage is equipped with everything you could possible need during your stay. Homely & warm feel; especially with the log fire. Thoroughly enjoyable stay in a great location close to Wells-Next-The-Sea, Holkham & Burnham Market (a short drive away). Most definitely will be returning.

Stunning little cottage
We moved into Brooke Cottage 2 days into a week long stay in Norfolk, due to some issues with our booked property. Firstly, Norfolk Hideaways and the property owner were extremely accommodating in allowing us to move and acted very quickly to source this cottage for us. The cottage was perfect and exactly what we would expect from a Grade 2 listed building. Quirky, comfortable and extremely charming. The space was perfect for our family of 4 and our dog. The log fire was easy to use and very quickly heated the whole of the downstairs and made for very relaxing evenings with a glass of red after long walks. The kitchen was very well equipped and we made the most out of dining in as we as dining out. The downstairs utility and toilet was an added bonus. The second downstairs reception room was very comfortable with enough space and seating for us all and the cottage is provided with a small but functioning TV/DVD player and a library of DVD's to use. Having 2 sons (11 and 7) who are used to gaming devices and internet on tap, it was an interesting concept only having a small TV but made for a very welcome change from home which is exactly what we wanted. There is no internet at the cottage which is maybe something that could be looked at in the future, mainly as it would have made browsing for local attractions/restaurants easier, and we could have accessed our amazon account with our firestick for evening family movies. With that said, having a break from always being connected was very welcome and the whole family managed just fine for 5 days. Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms, one with a king size and extremely comfortable bed with en-suite shower room and also a second family bathroom with toilet and bath. Beds were clean and well made, the rooms all very tidy and overall, a very welcome break from home. Nice little touches from the owners included a decent bottle of red wine on arrival and all important hotties (logs), kindling, firelighters to get us started. The only downside to this wonderful home from home is that you can only really walk to one pub locally for dinner. We stayed after christmas and for the new year and pubs and eateries get busy and booked up quickly so do plan ahead of travelling to ensure you get booked where you want to. Wells beach was amazing for our dog and the boys enjoyed spending hours crabbing over the harbour walls. We took a boat trip to watch the seals and as it was pup season, managed to get some great shots of the little ones in their new pup white fur. You will not be disappointed booking this cottage and we highly recommend a stay here. We would book again in a heart beat.

Quaint old cottage
A beautifully situated and quirky old cottage. It was small but well provisioned and had everything we needed for our weekend stay. Walks accessible more or less from our front door, the fantastic local deli nearby and a shirt drive to the beach at Wells. We loved our stay here. It was really warm and cosy and the logs and bottle of wine were greatly appreciated. We'd definitely return.

Lovely well appointed cottage in a quite pretty location
The cottage was a lovely historic cottage. It was well appointed and very warm and comfortable. We know the area well so it was delightful to spend more time in the aea visiting old and new haunts. We had unfortunately to curtail our visit as the Coronoviris took hold , which was a real shame.

One Hitch!
Always a joy staying at Brooke, I myself have stayed there before. Having grown up locally it's home from home for me. We were without hot water for the last three days which was frustrating over a weekend, the Boost didn't seem to kick in and there wasn't much info in the book. However my partner enjoyed his stay there despite that.

Slipping Down the League
Our third visit to Brooke cottage. After a nasty journey in the rain, the wind and the dark, we arrived at 10 to 7and were unable to get into the cottage since there was no key. in the key safe It took two hours before someone arrived with a spare key. We love the cottage but we did register that it is now looking a bit tired and things like latches and handles and the flimsy rugs need replacing. The bed is still comfortable but the bedding, especially the under sheet needs attention. A bottle of wine is always nice, but actually a bottle of milk might be even better. Brooke Cottage used to be in our top three of over 40 cottages, but it needs a facelift to bring it up to scratch.

Is this a dog friendly cottage?
Brook Cottage is very pretty and quirky in a lovely situation but despite your blurb there is no garden just an overgrown stony area with a table encrusted with bird poo. Not good for a Dalmatian who likes space. Where was the advertised BBQ? The house was clean after a fashion but I see no reason to have to supply toilet cleaner, it was bad enough having to buy our own refuse sacks. Despite previous clients thanks for milk and wine the fridge was empty and essential supplies consisted of three herbal teabags and a teaspoon of coffee. On the hottest weekend of the year all the downstairs windows were locked with no key so we had to leave the front door open. Lovely comfy bed though. I have never written a bad review before and didn't put this in the book but the owners can't have visited for ages looking at the state of the "garden" and sloppiness on their part and on yours does not encourage future bookings. Brooke Cottage Great Walsingham
A very quaint old cottage which was comfortable. The garden was another matter, on arrival we located the key and then had to fight our way to the front door through the vegetation and also the to the back garden, after two days we had to resort to cutting a path to the front and back door. We feel the garden furniture was not very good. For a very picturesque cottage the garden gave it an appearance of being neglected. We would recommend the cottage if the garden was tidied.

well located, traditional cottage
This traditional cottage was well located and had plenty of space. A couple of things to improve on: another 'chopping' board needed for the kitcheb as there was only one wooden breadboard provided. More than one drying=up cloth would have been appreciated.

Picture perfect Norfolk cottage
If you're looking for the epitome of a Norfolk brick and flint cottage beautiful Brooke Cottage is perfect. Quirky room designs, lovely décor and tonnes of history - we loved calling this cottage home for the week. We appreciated the wine (delicious) and milk that was left for us and found the cottage equipped with everything we needed and more. The beds were comfortable, the log burner easy to use, there were plenty of games and DVDs to keep us entertained in the evening and the pub was only a short walk away.

Beautiful cottage
We stayed at Brooke cottage for our first family holiday with a baby and it was perfect for us. Well put together, quaint, and surprisingly spacious. The only things that let it down where the lack of cupboard space in the kitchen and the very narrow stairs.

Lovely cottage and location but pity that the housekeeping was not up to the same standard
The cottage was just as pretty and characterful as in the pictures, but smaller. The kitchen particularly is tiny. The sloping roofs In the bedroom bruise your head until you get used to them But it is a lovely cottage. Our grouse was that for an expensive cottage the housekeeping was poor. The kitchen was poorly equipped - a hotchpotch of mugs and utensils. There were no floor towels in either bathroom and hardly any loo paper provided. We had to use two hand towels for the shower and bath and had to go to the Wells co op to buy necessaries the day after we arrived. These little things cost the landlord hardly anything but make a difference to the experience of arriving at and staying in a holiday cottage.

Very minor comments. No hand towels in kitchen and downstairs loo.Lighting not very adequate for reading.Teflon frying pan worn out.No collapsible steamer for vegetables.Garden gates need to be replaced. This cottage is very comfortable and we did have a very enjoyable stay!

Lovely cottage in a stunning location
Very enjoyable stay. We loved the walks in this area, especially the circular walk to Little Walsingham via the ford. The cottage is really lovely (though the incredibly steep stairs may not be for everyone!) The maps on the walls in the bathroom were a fun touch and let you contemplate the following day while having a soak. The kitchen seemed small at first but is well equipped once you get used to it. We very much enjoyed sitting out on the bench at the front in the morning and evening. It is SO quiet here! My only criticism is that it needs more good places to sit and relax. The settee (for two) is lovely but bar one, the chairs dotted around the place were not terribly comfortable to use for long which was not great with four of us.

Cozy and comfortable
A lovely cottage in a sleepy Norfolk village. Good facilities and very comfortable. We liked the seperate living room space that gave our 9 month old room to explore. The main bed was big and really comfortable. It was cold and rainy when we visited but the house heating was warm enough to not need to light the log burner. The garden wasnt particularly child friendly or laid to grass but there was a patio table and chairs There is plenty of grass on the green out the front. Walkable to the pub in the next village (20-30 mins) and there is a cafe just nearby. Everything else requires a drive.
