Hale Malie is a charming 1-bed/1-bath cottage retreat on a private half acre of lush Hawaiian rain forest just minutes from Volcano National Park. Featuring vaulted ceilings, a full kitchen, a sunny dining area, and expansive covered lanai, this cottage is ideal for two adult hikers, a couples' getaway, or a timeout for the traveling person. Hale Malie, formerly known as "Second Street Serenity," is perfect for couples seeking to enjoy the sounds of nature and relax in our native forest oasis.
Hale Malie is a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom private cottage that can comfortably accommodate 1-2 guests. Our interior finishes are excellent quality, with dual paned windows, and luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout. Queen size mattress, large bathroom with laundry facilities, living room and kitchen/dining area. The cottage is 500 sq. feet, providing a cozy and intimate experience for guests. As your host, we offer free, fast, and reliable internet as well as a TV in the bedroom equipped with an Amazon Fire Stick for your entertainment, though we suspect you'll want to spend most of your down time sipping a cup of coffee or enjoying a glass of wine on our spacious covered lanai to enjoy the beauty and sounds of nature.
Guests will have private access to the entire cottage and carport, which is situated on a 1/2 acre lot encompassed by native forest.
For your convenience and flexibility, we offer self check-in. A lockbox code will be provided to you the morning of your arrival. The lockbox is opened by entering the code given to you. Then, you must push the black release lever left and pull down the front of the lockbox door toward you. Once you retrieve the keys, return the lockbox door to its locked position and scramble the lockbox numbers.
Please remove your shoes before entering as is the custom in Hawai'i.
Our full sized kitchen is available for guests to use with Keurig coffee maker and coffee and tea gratis. There is also an in-unit washer and dryer available to guests.
The town of Volcano rains often and gets cold at night. The Volcano area gets over 120 inches of rain annually and temperatures during winter can get below 50 degrees. We recommend bringing a rain jacket, long pants, and warm socks. We have two small umbrellas available for guests to use. When it's raining, the house may get musty, despite our best efforts. We do provide a dehumidifier, ceiling fans, and a heater that work very well to keep our cottage fresh and moisture low.
Outdoor living on the covered lanai has never been more enjoyable; with seating perfect for your morning coffee or evening glass of wine, and a propane fire pit to keep you warm and toasty at night.
Our cottage is encompassed by the Pu'u Maka'ala Natural Area Reserve, so we are surrounded by some of the Big Island's best wet native forest and unique geological features. The wet koa and 'ohi'a forest of this Reserve Area on the northeast flank of Mauna Loa are important habitat for some of Hawai'i's rarest birds, as well as several rare plants. Because of our lush forest surroundings, please be aware that we sometimes have critters roaming around in the area outdoors, including but not limited to pheasants, spiders, and mosquitos.
The household tap water is fresh rainwater collected on site, double-filtered, and UV treated for home use; however, if you prefer not to drink from the tap, we recommend bringing bottled water. Living on an island, our resources are finite so please conserve water whenever possible. We will keep our guests informed if a propane delivery at the rear of the property is necessary during your stay to maintain gas and cooking needs.
The town of Volcano approximately one mile away has restaurants and small local convenience stores, which can be a bit pricey compared to other grocery stores. We suggest stopping at stores in Hilo, Kea'au or Mountain View to pick up supplies on the way to Volcano.
Before leaving the cottage, we would appreciate if our guests turn off all inside and outside lights and appliances (heater, mattress pad heater, etc.) and that all of the doors and windows are locked. Prior to your checking out, please clean and put away dishes and utensils, and return the key to the lockbox and scramble the numbers.
A Ring Doorbell video at the exterior of the front door is for security purposes. Evidence of camera tampering will result in our request for guests to leave.
We have a strict No Smoking policy. Please do not smoke in the cottage. If we find evidence that smoking is happening in our cottage, or that it occurred, we will file a claim with VRBO, and ask for $400 reimbursement for damages to our furniture, the unit, and our reputation with the property.
Lost Keys. If you lose the keys, there will be a lockout and replacement fee.
We pay TAT and GET State taxes of 14.75%, which are included in the nightly rate.
We are a legal, fully licensed Short Term Vacation Rental registered with the State of Hawai'i: STVR Registration Number 19-358255 and NUC No. 19-1012.
