A couple of years before the renowned botanist, Sir Thomas Hanbury, created one of the most beautiful botanical gardens of Europe in La Mortola di Ventimiglia, it was his compatriot Dr. Henry Bennet - personal gynecologist to Queen Victoria but also a passionate botanist – the one who understood the exceptional climatic conditions "of western Liguria", and who put together this breathtaking vegetation in the nearby Grimaldi property. Here, for centuries, the Saracen tower of the same name has stood out and became a Genoese bulwark after 1251 in defence of Ventimiglia. This tower, respectfully, expertly and lovingly restored by the current owners, is today an enchanting and welcoming residence, part of the larger complex of the Castello Voronoff which, in previous centuries, has hosted many illustrious people. In a dominant position, from its terrace you can admire the enchanting panorama of the sea and the beautiful town of Menton, the first urban settlement in French territory and the beginning of the renowned French Riviera. Torre Grimaldi maintains still today, after more than a millennium, its original defence function as it protects the privacy, intimacy and tranquillity of our guests who will find here the perfect refuge to isolate themselves a little and to imagine themselves in a magical distant past. The charm of the exposed stone, the warmth of the wood and the elegance of the furnishings harmoniously help to bring this enchantment to life and to let you spend a holiday of absolute uniqueness. The swimming pool, the tennis court, the large park and the parking of the "Castle Voronoff" complex on which dominates the Grimaldi Tower are common parts used by our Guests.
Interior:
A spiral staircase leads up to the main terrace with the entrance door that leads into an open-plan area with a small living area, dining table and kitchenette. From the entrance a first flight of stairs leads down to a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower, while a second flight leads up to the tower level with the living room, a bathroom with tub and a loft with a double bedroom with queen-size bed. A final flight of spiral stairs leads up to the panoramic terrace on the roof of the tower organised as a sitting area and sun loungers. Air conditioning in all bedrooms by mobile units.
Park:
The tower stands in a lush communal park arranged on several levels and terraces which extend over an area of more than 20,000 sq with various paths, viewpoints and benches on which you can rest while admiring the surrounding panorama. Born as a true botanical garden of Anglo-Saxon tradition in the mid 19th century, despite having lost some of its original wealth of botanical varieties over time, the park still boasts today a large multitude of species among which the main protagonists are orange and lemon trees, aromatic herbs, olives and palms, rose bushes, succulents and prickly pears. In the northern part of the park, is the communal tennis court, that you need to book, while the big communal swimming pool surrounded by a large solarium is located in the southern part of the property and can be easily reached on foot or by a lift built into the rock.
Please notice that photos are taken in spring, therefore flower blossoming, and the colours of the gardens' grass could be different at the moment of your arrival at the villa.
Swimming Pool:
The rectangular swimming pool for communal use is illuminated in the evening, measuring 20 x 10 m with a maximum depth of 4 m, is lined in light blue PVC, purified with salt and surrounded by a large solarium. Open from mid-June to mid-September, it is easily reached from the tower by the lift built into the rock, or on foot down the many paths.
