There was one piece of furniture to sit on other than the folding chairs at the kitchen table was a tiny loveseat covered by a ragged slipcover. Couch pillows were old. Beds need mattress pads. The only way to get privacy or reduce the noise was to close the shutters completely, and then the apartment would heat...
