A Hill Country Paradise
No superlatives can adequately describe the experience of staying at Elephant Mountain Ranch. The setting is idyllic. The hosts are charming, welcoming, and informative. Our group was all adults, but we all agreed this would've been over-the-top fun to enjoy as a child. Our primary activities were hiking, birding, floating on the pristine Nueces River, and cooking wonderful meals from the bounty we gathered at the Pearl Farmers Market in San Antonio before we headed to the Hill Country. Oh, and there was this amazing total solar eclipse during our stay. The kitchen area is large and perfect for social group meal preparation. The fridge space is enormous. The dining area overlooks the "lawn" and river where rock wrens and roadrunners entertained us at meal times. As first time visitors to Texas Hill Country we all added a half dozen or more new species to our life lists. Plenty of other wildlife to see plus a couple of exotic species to boot. The listing photos do not fully convey the cabin rustic chic and comfort of the house. We definitely plan on returning.

Stunning river house and mountain
Memorable long weekend in January for us 5 adults/4 kids 3-11. We all had plenty to do (and not do) on this sprawling, special property. This ranch has your own private river and "mountain." We had great hiking around the base, and up towering Elephant Mountain, and exploring the crystal-clear river and creek fronts. Did some fishing (and even catching) with the kids. Kids camped adjacent to the house part of the time. Super birdwatching from the sage/brush hillside to the tree-lined lowland along the river. Lovely, very updated rock house, with great kitchen, super fridge and freezer space, living area overlooking covered porch and river valley. Very comfortable beds. Evenings perfect with fireplace, firepit, and grill set up with kindling and larger mesquite. Herbert and Dixie were perfect hosts, and accessible by text as needed to answer a question, and even introduced us to a trusted mechanic in Uvalde when one in our group needed vehicle attention on the way out. We will be back, and in the summer those kayaks down by the river will get plenty of use.

Magical spot for a private family getaway!
You can see the pictures—this place is gorgeous! The perfect blend of country cabin with mod and boho elements that make it instantly comfortable. Spacious, yet cozy. Rustic, but with every modern convenience—you will NOT have to fight for fridge/freezer space. The set up with two 3-bed suites made it very easy to share with multiple households. Our kids had the _best_ time. Swimming, tubing, and chasing butterflies at the river. Climbing the mountain and exploring the caves. Laughing with cousins around nightly campfires and playing ping pong in the game room upstairs. What you can’t see from a listing is how wonderful the owners are. Stellar communication and hospitality. A thorough tour of all the places we might want to explore, regular trash removal, and daily food for the kids to feed the fish at the pond. And when we majorly goofed and wound up (100% though our own fault) with our van dangling over the edge of the creek, Herb not only made sure we got the help we needed, but was calm and reassuring when it would have been so understandable to be frustrated or put out. Such a wonderful experience. We hope we can make it back soon!

Beautiful place
We enjoyed our vacation at this amazing property. The river is right on the "backyard", readily accessible, super clean and very private. The house is very pretty and has all the necessary amenities. The fridge is very large and accommodates a lot of groceries. Overall, we are very pleased with our stay. The owners are very responsive.

Best Outdoor Spot in Texas
Elephant Ranch is simply unbelievably beautiful. Of all the places we've been to in Texas since we moved here 3 years ago, this place tops them all. The house has a phenomenal view of the valley and Nueces River and the remoteness and isolation from major population sites makes for a spectacular view of the stars and milky way during the nights. We went with two other families and had kids ages 4-10 that had a blast. We basically spent the days by the river, which was safe, fun, but most importantly very refreshing. We can't wait to come back.

Texas Gem
We had a wonderful time at Elephant Mountain Ranch! The property was perfect for our group of 6 adults and 6 kids ranging from 7-12 years old. The ranch house is filled with character, comfortable beds, all the amenities you might need. The loft space made the most perfect hang out for the kids while the adults enjoyed the showstopping view from the front porch. We enjoyed seeing wildlife, exploring the property, picnicking by the creek, swimming and playing in the crystal clear Nueces. We can’t wait to return!

Wow! Perfect Escape! Secluded!
This property is amazing... it is only a 1hr 45min drive from the center of San Antonio but feels like much further. (It's far enough from the city lights that the Milky Way was visible.). Uvalde is also not far if you forgot any necessities. The grounds are breathtaking. The views are endless with no other house in sight. The land is well maintained with a diverse mix of plants (native, landscaped, wildflowers.). We saw a large variety of birds, butterflies, deer, and other wildlife. The mountain is fun to explore and the refreshing, clear water river varies is depth, so there is something for everyone. If one of the property owners offers a tour, do it. It helped to know the grounds a bit and the owner is very personable. Speaking of the property owners, they were very quick to respond to any questions that we had before and during our stay. The house: We booked this property for seclusion of the land and proximity to water, but we definitely fell in love with the house too. It is everything that I could want in a rental. The beds and linens were comfortable, the kitchen and bathrooms were very clean, had plenty of towels, and good water pressure. (All of the beds have an end table, plenty of outlets, lots of hooks to hang towels, etc.) The kitchen is equipped with everything that we needed. We didn't use it, but there is also an outdoor grill. We enjoyed the fire pit immensely. I could imagine a large group enjoying the outdoor party lights, but we pretty much kept them off so that we could see more stars. (We actually saw 3 planets with our mid-range telescope.). The home has an eclectic charming aesthetic that is welcoming; it has just enough personal touches to feel like you're in a home without feeling like your invading someone's personal space. We love it and look forward to returning someday.

Heaven on Earth
This home is definitely Heaven on Earth. The setting is amazing with Elephant Mountain in the back, the Nueces River in the front, and stars in the sky you'll never see in the city. There's plenty of lush greenery, free roaming deer, birds and other wildlife waiting for you as you sit on the huge porch. You can relax in the river just a few yards from the front door, float on a tube, or fish to your heart's content. The cave on Elephant Mountain is a beautiful hike for adults and kids. The rock house has plenty of beds, fresh linens throughout, a kitchen with everything you might need...dishes, pots & pans, utensils, coffee makers, a blender, toaster, microwave, huge separate refrigerators and freezer, and large capacity washer and dryer. Outside has a grill, smoker, and fire pit and the owners have even chopped wood and provided everything you need to get the brisket and s'mores ready. The house is large with plenty of space for everyone to enjoy and is super clean. The kids loved the disco ball upstairs as their nightlight and enjoyed playing with the provided ping pong table. WiFi is available and there's even an office space if you have to work away from home. We've rented plenty of vacation properties and this is definitely the best one yet. The owners are very friendly, make sure you have everything you need to have a wonderful time, and are just a text away if you have any questions. Book this home and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Summer Get Away!
This place was a little piece of heaven. We already said we will come next summer. The views we amazing! So much to do, no technology was needed. Super clean, and the owners were so personable. Worth every penny! All boys loved the fishing, but tubing and rock skipping was fun too! One early morning we climbed the mountain to get to the cave! What a neat experience! One boy said that was his favorite! Memories made! We will be back! We loved it was all private, beat part!! ~Tiffany Showalter

Wonderful place overlooking the Nueces River and the Hill Country
House is very nice and updated with a lot of history from the area. AC works great and all the amenities were provided from plenty of comfortable beds to bbq pit etc. The private spring fed creek and river is very refreshing and great place to get out of the heat. There were no disappointments.
