Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outback of the Big Bend region. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.

Fossil Knob Ridge Two is an ultra-modern home built from a forty-foot and a twenty-foot recycled shipping container joined together. The floorplan has an extremely efficient and space saving design while preserving a surprisingly spacious feel. It includes a large bedroom with a two king-size beds, a living and dining area, kitchenette, and full bathroom. The shaded patio offers additional living space for your comfort and enjoyment. Modern design, styling, and art are featured inside and out. Please view the photos for the best description.

This rental sleeps up to four guests on two king-sized beds.

If you have a larger group, or simply want more space, we recommend also booking Fossil Knob Ridge One. It is also built from two shipping containers, one forty-foot and one twenty-foot. It is close by but faces away to preserve privacy for both rentals. Both homes have privacy and their own unique views. Check out the Fossil Knob Ridge One listing for more info on that home. You are welcome to rent either home or both.

Both of the Fossil Knob Ridge Rentals are on the electric grid for reliable and ample electric power. Both are fully air-conditioned and heated and have modern electric appliances. Potable water is trucked in and stored in holding tanks for your use. There is plenty of water available but trucking it in is expensive. We ask that you conserve it, but not so much as to compromise your comfort.

Located just one-mile northwest of the world famous Terlingua Ghost Town and twenty miles northwest of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks the Ghost Town and has breathtaking mountain views, including the Chisos Mountains and into Mexico.

Relax inside or on the shaded patio. Explore the fossil strewn 20-acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or even less.

Trip to Terlingua and Big Bend NP
Fossil Knob Ridge was the perfect home base for exploring Big Bend National Park. We loved being so close to the park and the town of Terlingua. The property had everything we needed and more, including amazing views from every window, comfortable beds, fast Wi-Fi, a fully stocked kitchen, a cute outdoor seating area for star gazing at night, the list goes on! Daryl and Janet were great hosts, and they made us feel welcome and comfortable as soon as we arrived. Easily one of our best trips ever - we can't wait to come back!

Homey Feel in the desert
My son and I really enjoyed our time here. I felt like the property owners go out of their way to make sure you feel at home. Even reached out via email while we were there which I thought was a very nice touch. Overall I will defiantly come back next time in the area. very clean and modern.

Privacy and views for lightyears
Fossil Knob Ridge is a great place to get away. The containers are clean and well decorated. Great views of the mountains by day, and breathtaking dark sky views of the Milkyway by night. The owners give you fair warning about the rugged drive up the hill, but it’s well worth all the bumps when you get there.

Comfortable & Relaxing
The modern house made it fun and had all the comforts of home. It was clean and the bed was comfortable, which was needed after long days of hiking and kayaking in Big Bend! It was so quiet out on the back patio with a fire every night. Memories made and a great stay!!!

Great view and location
We were here for a week and loved the place. The view of the area and for sunsets and moon rise is spectacular. It is very private and quiet. The location to both the National and state parks is nice. The little house is comfortable and has everything you need for your stay.

Short but sweet
Delightful two nights at Fossil Knob Ridge. Property was exactly as advertised - modern, clean, and the perfect Terlingua Ghost Town location. No issues and check n-out was a breeze. Sunrises, sunsets and star gazing were amazing - relaxing and inspiring at the same time. I'd note there are 4 of these units at the same location - but they are oriented for maximum privacy. If you do want to make a fire, bring wood and a fire starter. We'll be back.

Out of this world
Terlingua is very weird town. You should visit. This is one of four amazing container homes perched on a ridge above Terlingua Ghost Town. The little homes are a work of art, and the property managers have thought everything. I stay at a lot of vrbo properties, and this one was one of the best prepared I have ever stayed in Waking up with the the view is fantastic. Cocktails and BBQing on the little patio at sunset. Sitting around the fire in evening. And star gazing into wee hours. You won't want to leave.

Great location and great views!
The road to get to the house is quite bumpy, but once you get to the house, it’s like a little slice of heaven! I loved sitting out back at night watching the sunset and gazing at the stars - not a house or light in sight! The kitchen sink is very small, but the property was perfect for a family of three (two adults and a 5yo).

Perfect Getaway
This was the perfect getaway spot. It’s an absolutely amazing job on a container house. If you’re looking to get away from EVERYONE, and hear nothing but silence, this is your dream. When they say the road is rough, they aren’t lying. We are from the country, travel lots of not so well maintained gravel roads, but this is ROUGH(we were in a 4x4 high clearance truck). Wouldn’t stop us from going back though! The sunsets, Milky Way and stars were more than perfect. We did run out of water one day( second day we were there) we called and it was delivered within 30 minutes. Highly recommend!

Property was amazing. Just enough space and a beautiful view. The only reason for 4 stars on cleanliness was because some of the dishes were still dirty when I went to use them.

Bugs, flying and biting in room.
We left 2 days early, due to bugs and a large lizard in the container. I contacted the manager and still have heard nothing back. The deadbolt door does not lock, which can be a concern at this remote location.

Great unique spot!
We had a great stay in Terlingua. The shipping container is the perfect spot for privacy, views, uniqueness, while maintaining proximity to food, drinks, and sights. The space is small, but since only 2 of us stayed we were able to store belongings on the top bunk. It had more amenities than I thought possible for the small space. There is no one in sight when you step out on the porch - peaceful! It takes ~15 minutes to drive from Terlingua to the top of the hill where you stay but it was worth it. I didn't see any other places along the way I would have rather stayed! Great breakfast spot right at the bottom of the hill. Easy drive to Big Bend. We would definitely stay here again!
