About this property

Tent & RV Camping Sites on Pecos River.. NOT A CABIN

This private area that was homesteaded by my great-grand parents back in 1867 is very beautiful, secluded and so peaceful. It is a six generation historical ranch settlement. There are three historical cabins in the area. Two cabins are listed through VRBO that can be rented. However, this listing is strictly for tent & RV camping only. You can start by waking up early and having your coffee while listening to the river or the Acequia which travels throughout the property. Enjoying the view of humming birds and mule deer moving through the river banks. Enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the world for Rainbow and German Brown trout without ever needing to go more than just a few feet on your own private section of the river. Later before lunch comb the area for arrowheads, turquoise and silver. The small now ghost town of Terrero was made famous as a busting mining town in the days of the old west. The original mine sets less than a half mile from the property across Hwy 63 from the entrance to property. After cooking some of those fresh cold water trout for lunch take a hike up the canyon in the middle of the Sante Fe National Forrest to see other wildlife. If the quiet seclusion is too much don’t worry, the town of Pecos is only about a 25 minute ride through the beautiful river canyon. The old Tererro General Store has closed since Covid & not sure if it will reopen. However, they may still have horse back riding, guided pack tours, and for the sportsman out there guided elk, deer, and bear hunts. Be sure to check out the Tererro General Store's Facebook page for activities and other amenities. For a more vibrant experience head to the historic town of Santa Fe which is about a 40 minute ride south where you will experience excellent southwest cuisine inspired by native chilies harvested from the area as well as native southwestern art, and heritage. The town also receives its fair share of entertainers from local bars to large scale concerts. Be sure to hit Jacolopes on Cerillos for great souvenirs and the Native Market at 'Old Towne' for authentic southwest jewelry, and art. After a day in town come back to a quiet evening, start a fire in the pit and enjoy the clearest sky you will ever see. The stars are countless and the evening air is cool, just like the perfect fall night, but in summer. At last you will be rocked to sleep by the sound of the rushing river outside. A true paradise awaits you. There are two community picnic tables that are available if not in use by other guests. There are trails up at Jacks Creek if you like to hike. There are local restaurants like Frankie’s Casanova, Casa De Herrera, the Shell Gas Station known as Ponchos, they have a small grill inside & the little Americana Hamburger stand across from the school has good food if you want to eat out but stay close by in Pecos. Santa Fe is 48 miles South from us which takes about an hour drive and Las Vegas, NM is North from us and takes about an hour as well. There is WiFi to surf the Web, video chat or FaceTime on the property. You are at about 8,123 elevation, therefore, WiFi is not guaranteed due to storms and winds. The nights and mornings are cool & the days are warm. There is always a breeze blowing off the river to keep you cool in the heat of the day. You will see wild ferns, mushrooms & native flowers. There are many different species of birds here as well. You will see the King Fish flying up & down the river. Yellow Finches playing in the bushes by the riverbank. And there are beautiful Eagles, Magpies, Stellar Bluejays, and many other species of birds. They are a delight for the bird watchers. There are many beautiful butterflies and hummingbird moths as well. It states there is one bedroom, half bath and shower only because VRBO listings are set up that way. However, there is NO bedroom or NO bathroom for the camping guests. There is a double seater outhouse on the hill, otherwise, u will need to bring ur camping toilet. You are welcome to bring a camping shower if you like. On the other hand, there is the river to gather water from if needed. There is a large field that has an Acequia flow from the Pecos River that runs throughout the property. You can fish out of that as well. So if you decide to camp in the large field, the Acequia water will be behind you. The camping area behind the main cabin is more secluded and private. For interesting reading on the area be sure to look up 'Pioneers of the Upper Most Pecos', and Beatty's Cabin. We would love for u to come and stay at our historical settlement. Fires r allowed as long there is not a band due to very dry conditions or very high winds. It depends on the conditions that the National Forrest’s put into place. It will have a sign coming up on ur right that will let u know or u can just ask before coming.just come & unplug from the busy hot city. U definitely will get rested & rejuvenated here.

The BEST wilderness getaway!
Beautiful secure camping site, the BEST host, views, fishing, wilderness, communication with host. Site had plenty of room, great campfire ring with stumps to sit on, near the water with turkeys, birds, flowers, and Wi-Fi for emergencies! Will be going again for sure!

Saw it but had to leave
We pulled into the property. Completely not as advertised. The "Fire Put" looked as it hasn't need used in many months. Camp in a field with nothing around. My daughter was fell I'll on the way there, so after pulling in and saw this situation, realized it won't work. There's no reception, so I could not cancel. It sucks to get charged for 2 nights for not staying but for my daughter's well being is worth it. Also, the Ariel photo is misleading due to the trashy homes and driveways leading to the Cabin but with many structures on the property. Not what I expected.

RV spot
Sondra has a huge mowed field to park your RV next to the catch and release pond. No utilities ( water, sewer, or electric,) but Sondra welcomed us bringing our generator. We did use our quiet generator, but almost felt guilty, cause it’s so peaceful and tranquil on this property… Sondra should rename the property To “ Unplugged” or “ Tranquilicity” my shoulders And mind are relaxed, and I’m sorely leaving home back to the grind.

Peaceful & Beautiful
The large meadow is filled with grasses & flowers and is very peaceful. Perfect for a trailer or RV. The river was flowing a bit fast for my Husbands intended fishing so we went site seeing. Host was very friendly & helpful. Thanks Sondra! We look forward to visiting again.

Beautiful, peaceful...a verified piece of heaven.
We had an amazing time at this property. We arrived minutes before rain so only had a shade and chairs for shelter for about 2 hours before we could get the rest of our gear across the footbridge. Did we mind? Heck no! Keeping dry during the storm, listening to The Pecos rage...all a good time. The area across the river is beautiful and peaceful. Yes, neighbors are close, but from the other side of the river, you'd almost never know. The main property is just as beautiful. My daughter loved swinging by the pond while we watched fish jump as well as a very cute mama duck and her babies. Our dog was exhausted by the second afternoon (not an easy pup to wear out) and put herself to bed. As the rest of the forest was closed, we mainly stayed at camp, but had a ton of fun. Ponchos (gas station in Pecos) is very good for breakfast burritos, probably everything. Words of advice: if you have small children please know you are right on the river. Same for dogs. Our pup was terrified of the bridge untill she wasn't, so a close eye (and tie out) are important. There are some pieces of old downed cattle fence that can be of concern. We happened to set camp right on top, but used cardboard pieces to cover and mark the parts we didn't want to trip on. Outhouse is, we'll, an outhouse. If you're not cool with a brief trek to poop, bring a camp toilet. We had no issues though. Overall, 2 adults, 2 dramatic teens, a crazy dog, 3 nights, 2 evenings with rain...one of the best 4th of July's ever. Thank you Sondra for letting us share you space. We will be back!
