Tarapoto sits on the edge of the vast jungles of eastern Peru. It's the closest place you can fly to after your forays into the rainforests of the Amazon near Iquitos, in order to reconnect with Peru's road network.

There's a wonderfully laid-back vibe here, plenty of street art, local markets, as well as restaurants serving delicious regional specialities, and bars serving drinks made from soaking jungle roots in cane liquor.

If you come here, stay at El Mirador. There's a terrace with amazing jungle views and the breakfast they serve is probably one of the best I've eaten in Peru.

"Overall the property was nice. We stayed four nights. We were the only guests. I would think for the price per night of $56 they would have more comfortable beds. The pillows were also really small. There was only one small bar of soap that lasted for one bath luckily we brought our own. Only one roll of toilet paper was provided and we had to purchase more. The room doesn't provide shampoo. There is no daily cleaning. There were many ants. They didn't bite but they were all over the bed and...

"We stayed at La Patarashca Hotel for two nights. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. The grounds are lush and gorgeous, you’ll feel like your in the jungle! The rooms were basic and the mattress wasn’t the most comfortable. Despite that I would book here again. It’s blocks from the Plaza de Armas. The breakfast buffet was generous and I would highly recommend the attached restaurant for dinner. "
