Filthy house in unsafe location
Upon arrival at the property, I immediately contacted the owner and sent photos verifying the state the rental property was in. At that time, the best they could offer was to have someone come out the next day to clean, which really should have been done prior to allowing renters to enter the property. The house was filthy, smelled of mold, and was unsafe. There were multiple cracks/openings around the entry door that didn’t seal, window coverings that did not fully cover the windows, allowing anyone from the street to see into the house. The entry door combination was overly simple and I was advised that it could not be changed after asking the owner if it could for safety reasons. No one should have been reasonably expected to remain in that house in the condition it was in. Because of the state the property was in, I had to leave that night because of numerous safety and hygiene issues, all of which were documented for the owner and in a complaint to VRBO and Barclays that were not resolved. I did not leave the property simply because I wanted to; I instead made that decision to protect my family. Unsafe and dirty are the reasons I chose not to allow my family stay in that property. I should not have to pay for services that I did not receive – regardless of what the owner wants to state as contractual provisions to protect their payment. VRBO also expressed no interest in resolving the matter; in essence communicating that they don’t care what condition properties are in.
