Tranquility and peace in the heart of Golden Bay! Strawberry Cottage is the perfect haven to relax and get away from busy lives. Surrounded on 3 sides by the Kahurangi National Park (Middle Earth), the property is set amongst 100 acres of regenerating native bush and streams, with several bushwalks that get you close to nature.

The eco-friendly cottage is fully solar-powered and hot water is backed up by a wetback. Facilities include a wood range, gas heater, gas cooker and gas fridge. 15 min. to Takaka and beaches, private gravel access (suitable for 2-wheel-drive, not for very low-riding vehicles).

The perfect base to explore Golden Bay and Middle Earth, including Pupu Springs, West Coast beaches, Farewell Spit and famous walks, such as the Abel Tasman National Park and Heaphy Track. Or just enjoy the enchanted birdlife and spectacular views and simply RELAX!

The cottage was in a lovely spot but value for money was lacking.
The cottage was in a lovely spot but value for money was lacking. The furniture and fittings were very tired and dated with blankets over a 1960s couch and chairs. The exterior could have done with some attention and the deck definitely needed a safety rail. The beds were very poor quality and hard and I would hate to think of what the place would be like with nine people there, as the site suggests it can hold. It should have smoke alarms and this has been raised before. Very dangerous!!

Rustic style cottage, nestled in the forest far away from anything. We loved the private tracks and the kids loved running around the beautiful forest. A long drive in, so do your shopping before you go! So clean, and loved cooking on the coal range.

Remote cottage for bird watching, star gazing within reasonable distance to Golden Bay coast
Overall our experience here was quite positive but should emphasize this cottage is quite remote, approx. 15 min drive on narrow windy gravel road (we had a lot of rain and it was fine). But when you're there you feel like you're in the national park, no sign of another person, totally dark sky, LOTS of birds including the resident sneaky Weka prowling around for snacks. Kitchen was functional with good gas double burner, no oven but a classic wood burning stove with kindling which we used to cook one rainy night for fun. Bathroom brand new and nice, beds/pillows left something to be desired, had to look for sheets and towels but there were plenty. Could use a good dusting/cobweb removal. This is off grid living - solar was totally up to the task for hot water for 3 people on several cloudy/rainy days. Our favorite time was coming back after a day exploring and sitting on the deck watching the sunset over mountains, birds singing and feeding in the garden. If you're not a high-maintenance traveler this is a lovely spot.

The location is lovely in the bush.
The location is lovely in the bush. A bit of a long drive to get there but that's how you get to lovely spots. It was great to find somewhere with room for nine people to stay. It is a bit of a squeeze if you do have nine, particularly if the weather is wet because there is no covered outside space to hang wet gear. There is limited power (which was made clear in the instructions) and I don't recommend trying to vacuum.

We've had a great stay at Strawberry Cottage, and particularly enjoyed breakfasts on the terrasse with amazing views to the valley and the sea. There is a 10min drive on gravel (and sometimes very bumpy!) road to access to the house , which makes the location secluded and very calm. We even heard kiwis calling from the bushes, one evening! Will return if we have a chance!
