Walk to White Oak Canyon Trail in Shenandoah National Park

White Oak Canyon Cottage is a cozy cottage nestled in a beautiful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Robinson River and Cedar Run. It is located adjacent to the Shenandoah National Park and is literally steps from the White Oak Canyon Hiking Trail and Cedar Run Hiking Trail lower trailheads. These trails offer some of the best waterfall hiking trails in the Shenandoah National Park. White Oak Canyon Cottage is also located about .8 miles to the Old Rag Mountain hiking trail parking lot.

Exactly as advertised
We had a great time, especially with short walk to the hiking trails. The trailer was exactly as advertised and had everything we needed. It’s a cozy stay for sure, but worth it. The place was easy to find, and the owner was helpful, accommodating, and accessible.

Quiet and peaceful!
It was nice to be so close to the trail heads! We enjoyed our stay in Bill's little cottage. It was rustic but with new amenities and quiet. Would stay there again!

Great location
This was the perfect location for us. We were able to walk to White Oak Canyon lower parking lot instead of dealing with the congestion of cars trying to park there. The cottage was everything we needed it to be for what we were there for. Really all you need to bring is food and clothes. Beautiful property. Bill provided us with all info needed to cover any question we may have had. I would definitely stay here again. It was easy, convenient, and affordable!

Simple place with great hiking location.
This a single wide trailer. It was clean but the floors smelled strange. It had everything we needed, and even some extra food but I think we are simple people. The location is remote, which is what we really liked, but would advise others to bring all the food you need with you. If you like to hike, this is a great location for both the Old Rag trail and White Oak Canyon trail. You will be literally few feet from both.

Pretty much as advertised, we had a good time
The property is accurately represented: it is basically a single wide trailer with an enclosed porch added on, in a pretty remote location (no nearby food or services, no cell service). We enjoyed our stay. The hike from the property was very nice. The microwave wasn't working while we were there, but the property manager did email us about it and said he was going to have it fixed (apparently it had just broken with the previous guests). There was an issue with ants, mostly in the kitchen, but a few in other rooms.

Best host ever!
I ended up not being able to stay at this property because of a heating issue that had to be fixed, but just wanted to send a note of appreciation for Bill, the host. The information he sent when I first booked the property was SUPER helpful (including lots of practical info such as the hiking trails accessible from the property, those requiring a permit, where to get the permit, etc...) and then when I shared that the main goal of my stay was star gazing, he sent me exact timing for the International Space Station sightings for the dates of my stay, which I thought was SO thoughtful. Thanks Bill!!

Run-down lodging
The accommodation is a trailer, not a cabin. It has electricity, kitchen facilities and a bathroom. It also has a screened-in porch, which is nice for sitting outside. But linen and towels were woefully inadequate - thin, torn blankets; no top sheets; one hand towel for two people. And the beds are uncomfortable. Lastly, it's situated on a property that has not been mowed and with a overflowing garbage container in the back. The location is excellent - near a lovely hike - but far from the rest of Shenandoah. Because of its condition, I would not recommend this property.

Good for being outdoors.
If you are going to be hiking the trails and just need the basics, then this is your place. The next door neighbors charge $10 to park in their lawn for the hikers. So it's good for that. The A/C will not cool the place on a hot day, and being big soccer fans...we wanted to catch some games on TV while there. "World Cup". Every 4 years. No TV/ Dish as advertised. We did get to see some bears in the the back yard tho...very cool. The person who takes care of the place lives on the property. But we never met him.

Rustic property close to Old Rag trail circuit
This is a great place to stay if you want to be close to Old Rag Mountain. Cell phone coverage is poor or nonexistent so it is important to communicate with the owner prior to losing coverage. For example, ask for the door code before getting off the main highway! Once you are inside the property, you can access Wi-Fi. Everything about the property is fine, but there were some ants and millipedes to contend with, mainly in the kitchen. If you want to hike Old Rag from the property, you will want to start from the access point at the Berry Hollow parking spot, which is about a mile away. If you want to start from the Old Rag parking lot, you’ll need to drive approximately 12 miles to do so. The closest convenience store is about 5 miles away (going back the way you came on Weakley Hollow Rd) and it has a grill that serves breakfast lunch and dinner.

Peaceful getaway
Listing was completely accurate. So close to the trails we wanted to hike. There wasn’t anything that we needed that wasn’t supplied there. Not much else around so we would suggest taking all the food you need. There is a shop about 30 minutes away but very expense as you expect in this type of area. One thing to be aware of. The listing did not mention a grill, but there was one. Unfortunately all our dinners needed to be grilled as we packed for a camping experience but it was not a propane grill and we had no charcoal. We made accommodations but if you know this ahead of time, no problem! It wasn’t the cleanest but again you are renting a camper in the woods. Thanks so much for letting us use your place. It’s just the type of location we want while vacationing, secluded, private and away from the daily noise we are used to.

Really close to hiking trails, but just ok
Let me say on the positive side; it was as advertised. It was close to the white oak trailhead, which was an amazing hike. It was remote and quiet, and a mama bear and her two cubs loved to eat from the apple tree in the back yard, which my family and I loved watching. Bill even let us check in early, was great at communicating, and it was well-stocked. On the down side, the window air conditioner tried its best, but isn’t strong enough to really keep the place cool; some fans might help. The top bunk was missing, so one of our kids slept on the couch, which was under the air conditioner, so he didn’t really mind. The main bedroom’s mattress really does sag quite considerably. And as the previous reviewer stated, while it seems like it gets surface cleaned, I don’t think its been cleaned well in awhile. There is visible grime, hair and dead bugs in corners, behind faucets, doors and windows. My biggest problem is it had some bugs, and not just the kind that fly in while the door is open. I hesitated leaving this review, but in the end decided I would have appreciated a heads up.

Great location, run down home
While driving, the woman who cleans the property and lives next door was so agressively up my butt driving to the place that I hit a huge pothole looking behind me for a split second. Pulled over and she sped off, only to see me pull into the rental and tried to brush off the damage as not a big deal. 2 tires-$371. New rims-$700. Mind you we had to wobble all the way back to GA with kids in the car before getting new rims. Owner and the caretaker of this place could care less. Dont let that woman get behind you, for the love of stress. The drive there is a very narrow, windy mountain road. Meant for cars, must be experienced. For reference, I drive tail of the dragon in my free time, I know a bit about mountain roads. I didnt know that the smallest turn would have a foot deep hole on the passenger side. Multiple places where itll tear your car up. Got there and they didnt know it was reserved. Sat outside with the bugs for about an hr while they put the house back together after installing floors. Floors didn't look new, there was a weird hump in the kitchen floors. Spider webs and bugs all over, not a big deal since its in a wooded area. The location is amazing, loved that part. The mold in the window unit was overwhelming. Mold in the bathroom was common, most older homes have this problem. Wifi is satellite, there is no cell phone service (verizon). Loved the disconnection from the world but be prepared. Amenities were also very basic.

Really cute and cozy place! There was some dirt tracked in on the floor when we got there and a little mold in the shower, but other than that the important stuff (like sheets and towels) were clean. Everything worked and looked cared for and the check in/out process was super painless with the owners. Honestly can't complain and we enjoyed our stay, but I definitely wouldn't bring more than 4 people.

Remote relaxation
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay. The area was so beautiful and peaceful. Bill has the place well stocked with essentials. The place was warm and cozy. Hot water heater went out and Bill took care of it quickly! Although the property is adjacent to the National park, be aware that it’s a good 45 min drive to the 2 nearest entrances. The park trails near the Cottage are within walking distance and beautiful but you can’t drive into the Park. Thanks Bill we had a great time!

The place is ok
First of all, the search criteria for this cabin needs to be changed. I found it by doing a search for a place that sleeps 6, and it came up, even though it only sleeps 4 comfortably. By the time I caught the error, it was too late, and 2 of my kids had to sleep on the couches. That's my only gripe about the place. other than that, it was fine. As for the location, meh. It is close to a major hiking trail, but it is also very far away from everything else. Getting to Luray or onto the Skyline drive is at least 45 minutes. nearest grocery store is a lousy Food Lion 25 minutes away. There are no decent places to eat anywhere nearby. And even though you are technically in the mountains, it does not really feel like it. The air in mid-September was warm and humid. It never felt breezy, cool or crisp like it does at cabins at higher elevations. So, just be aware of this when you go there.
