Dog friendly house
I chose this rental because dogs were allowed, not limited by size, and the back yard was fenced in. The location was also close to most of the friends I would be seeing and places I would be going. I received a check in email from the owner, Robert Dawes. He told me that he had forgotten the door code and to use the last four digits of my phone number. When I arrived at the house, those numbers didn't work. I called and he told me to hit the * key after the four numbers. That worked. The interior of the house, in my opinion, is as close to a dump as I've ever stayed in. Dirty, water stained walls. Cracked and patched plaster primarily on all the ceilings, but walls as well. Broken, uneven floor boards between kitchen and back bedroom. Back storm door bottom panel was banged up and not entirely in the frame. Light switches painted same color as the walls and difficult to find. Mold along door edges of refrigerator. Bathroom vanity door broken and poorly repaired. Bathroom poorly lit. Lots of extension cords for refrigerator and table lamps. I slept in the main bedroom that had a king sized bed. The mattress wasn't just soft, it was worn out. The mattress was concave. I didn't move to the back bedroom because I'd already slept in one bed and I didn't want the host thinking there was more than one person in the house. I was also a bit nervous because there was one lock on both the back and front door. No deadbolts or slide bolts available.

Easy and convenient
We were going to be downtown for multiple events and wanted a place to relax for in between locations. The host let us pick our door code to make it easy and everything in the home was as expected from the listing. Ended up meeting the host on checkout day and they were great people.

Ceiling leaks
Not much good to say. The place is old and in need of desperate repairs. Kitchen ceiling leaked every day from upper unit. Prior damage indicates this has been an issue for a long time. Yard was full of dog feces and unusable. Ceilings and walls were cracked, floors were a tripping hazard and extra rollaway mattress was ripped and stained. Honestly this place is not habitable and should be removed from platform.

Great Location, Rough Interior
The good: The location was excellent to get to all the attractions we wanted to hit- City Museum, the Arch, the beautiful Central Library, and the zoo. Having a half bath was really helpful for getting ready in the morning, and rare in this kind of dwelling. The yard was great for our dog and we were grateful there were no extra fees to have her. The neighborhood was quiet and we felt comfortable there. The not-so-good: The inside of the place is in rough shape, and there is a smell of what we could only call (unused) scented cat litter. It has clung to us and our belongings and is still there on some items (including our daughter's hair, despite multiple showers) almost a week later. The cabinet under the kitchen sink was fairly moldy. The fridge froze a lot of our food that we brought, even being set on the warmest setting. There were a few rough boards with nails on the way to the back bedroom and we had to caution our kiddos not to get snagged on them. We're thankful for a last-minute place that allowed us to have a very nice time in town at an affordable price. A few updates/fixes might make it a bit more accommodating.

Thanksgiving weekend
Both my husband and myself loved the fenced in yard. It was so convenient for our dog. We found the bed in the primary very comfortable, ,(you have to like soft beds). The location was perfect for us, just 6 miles down Gravois to Afton, and hanging out in Soulard. Plus we just hopped on the interstate to go home to Wisconsin.

Good location, host responds very promptly!! House itself needs a lot of work!! Very old, rickety and neglected. Pricey for the condition of the property but served the purpose.

Convenient and comfy stay
Overall this spot was great! Communication was such and efficient, getting to set our own door code before arrival! Space is roomie with some old build charm. My only comment is that we got in late and then light switches were a bit hard to find, one they weren't in obvious places, two they were painted the same color as the wall. Not enough to not be a 5 star stay for me, bit maybe new switch plates that aren't painted and/or floor in the dark tape?

Low Cost Cozy Home
Check in was a breeze and the host was awesome and very welcoming. His communication was great and very prompt, and he got us what we needed when requested without any issues. The property is an older home and was perfect for our family. The extra half bath was very convenient. Kids loved the Keurig and coffee that came with the rental. If you want to stay in a state of the art home, don't stay here. If you want a home in a nice neighborhood that is close to downtown St. Louis, but is low cost, then this is a place for you. We would stay again.

Home was a bit run down and in need of an extensive remodel but it's to be expected with the age of the home and cost per night. Owner did a good job for us Hopefully he did something about the hornets nest in the backyard. Both my wife and dog got bit by the swarm that came out after them

The best thing about our stay was the location. The home was neat and clean and roomy for the three of us. We were able to visit the market a very short distance away. The street is full of old homes that are wonderful to see. There is only on street parking.

Great location!
Reading some of the other reviews had me a bit worried, but Robert was great to work with. Issues other guests had were mostly because the property is an older property. The issues were cosmetic and not functionality, but again you will have that with those older homes in St. Louis. Our stay was great, however, our dogs decided to bark at the upstairs tenants. Eventually they mellowed out, but if you have barky dogs, this could be a problem for you. We felt very safe at the location and were so close to everything. The only thing that we probably could have needed was a few more washcloths, but no biggie. We would stay there again.

Can't believe VRBO allows this property to be rented
I felt confident about renting this property from the ratings and pictures. However, pictures can be touched up, or deceiving and it's very easy to "make up" reviews. After we entered the property, and were able to stand the stench of must and mold, we were able to see how much TLC this property needed. There was a hole in the bottom of the outside door to allow outside critters inside. The keypad has a hole in it to allow anybody to enter from the outside. Not to mention, the door looks like it was kicked in a few times. There were water leaks in most of the rooms that were left untouched with buckling walls in the corners. Mold can be seen under the sink in the kitchen. The tiles in the hallway bathroom were being held up by nails. There were holes in the kitchen floor, and loose floor boards that could be dangerous to walk on if somebody was barefoot, not to mention there was a hole in the floor where you could see the basement. Also, the bedroom doors were not adequately fit. There were 6 inch gaps between the frames and the doors. The spare bedroom door swung both ways and could only be locked from the outside. The hallway bathroom door could not close unless it was slammed or held shut. The extension cord for the refrigerator ran behind the stove, which to my understanding, is a HUGE fire hazard. Both the front and back stairwells were missing railings, which could also be very dangerous. The property was clean, I'll give it that, but as for the safety of allowing guests to stay here, I'm very disappointed that VRBO would allow this property on their website. I was also very disappointed with the comment the owner responded to a complaint, calling her a "Karen" and not very apologetic. We ended up leaving after the first night there. I reported the property to VRBO, and sent pictures of the property. I'm looking for a refund for the night we did not stay. I'm not looking for a comment from the owner, I just want to let others know that this property SHOULD NOT be allowed to rent through VRBO. A simple inspection of the property would certainly prove that to be true.
