About Shelter Island
Surrounded by water, Shelter Island is perfect for swimming, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding and biking. Shelter Island is only about 6 miles across, so you can drive to every beach and destination in 5 to 10 minutes. This Island Retreat is just a short drive to Sunset Beach, Wades Beach and Shell Beach. Mashomack Preserve, a 3,000 acre nature preserve, has miles of hiking trails. Restaurants, cafés, charming shops, public golf, mini golf, a supermarket and a drug store are just a few minutes away. There are also bike, kayak and paddle board rentals.
About Hay Beach
Hay Beach is a tranquil part of Shelter Island with homes spread far apart, little to no light pollution and an amazing night sky. When you step out on the decks at night and gaze up at the sky, the stars are so very visible and truly beautiful. During the day, you can take a short 1/3 mile walk to Dawn Lane and see Bug Light, the lighthouse across the water near the village of Orient. Or walk to Menhaden Lane ¾ of a mile away where Hay Beach (the beach which our part of Shelter Island is named after) is located. This 1-mile long beach is natural and unspoiled with no facilities to distract from the beauty of nature. When you are done exploring, you can come back to the house for a dip in the pool, relax on the comfortable ergonomically shaped sun bench and look at the trees and the sky, or lounge on the decks.
