The venerable Villa Victoria has recently undergone a comprehensive energy renovation in consultation with the Bündner Denkmalschutz. The building's energy needs are now met 100% from renewable sources (primarily geothermal energy). This is entirely in the spirit of sustainable use of scarce natural resources - and also in the spirit of tourism interested in sustainability.
The Villa Victoria (at that time still called Villa Kurhaus) was built in 1874 as a dépendance of the Hotel Kurhaus right next door - by a very well-known Swiss architect who had built just about every palazzo of the Russian nobility in St. Petersburg. The villa was used to accommodate special guests of the hotel - which is saying something, as rows and rows of crowned heads of half of Europe came and went in the hotel next door.
It is rumoured that Queen Victoria also resided here (hence the name Villa Victoria). And that on still full moon nights, the tall figure of John Brown, Queen Victoria's devoted Scottish servant, can still be seen wandering around the villa cutting flowers for his Queen. Well. This is not scientifically proven. What is certain, however, is that today adventure seekers and those looking for recreation, and families too, are welcome at Villa Victoria. And that their children's eyes are more likely to see Villa Victoria as Villa Kunterbunt.
