The country
Sciacca, due to its position, is one of the most convenient locations to visit western Sicily. About 100 km from Palermo, 75 km from the Valley of the Temples, 40 km from the Scala dei Turchi, 40 km from the temples of Selinunte, 100 km from Erice ...
Sciacca is a tourist center of primary importance, renowned for the therapeutic virtues of its thermal springs (momentarily closed for renovation), the production of fine ceramics, its beaches, and its historic Carnival: one of the most beautiful and ancient of the Sicilia. In the Norman era it was surrounded by imposing defensive walls and, in the following centuries, it was enriched with splendid monuments of civil, military and religious character which still today embellish its historical center.
On Monte Kronio, close to the city, the Natural Reserve of Monte S. Calogero protects a complex of caves of both natural and archaeological interest. At the foot of Mount Kronio (S. Calogero) is the "Enchanted Castle": an olive grove where hundreds of suggestive heads are carved on the rock or on olive trunks by a unique peasant artist, Filippo Bentivegna, who died in the years 60.
In addition to the Carnival, the Feast of the Madonna del Soccorso (August 15), is the most interesting traditional festival of the place.
