2nd Base

Welcome to 2nd Base on Lake Michigan, the grandest of the five Great Lakes. Nestled in Sawyer, MI in the private community of Shorewood Hills, this spacious and unique property consists of a main house and a separate guest house overlooking the lake. You will fall in love with the private beach, the sound of crashing waves, the spectacular sunsets, the stunning views of Lake Michigan, and 2nd Base of course! All of this provides a great venue for a relaxing holiday that will bring you back to nature. Best yet, it is only one-and-a-half hours from Chicago.

The three-story main house has six bedrooms and five bathrooms accompanied by multiple living areas overlooking Lake Michigan. The entire home is bathed in natural light, and guests will enjoy the expansive lake views and light coming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights throughout the house. The open-concept main floor has a large kitchen featuring an island with an electric cooktop, two sinks, a dishwasher, a garbage compactor, and a buffet area. There is a lovely dining area attached to the spacious kitchen with a large custom-made maple round table that seats 12-14 guests. A comfortable living area with a sectional sofa, a mounted flatscreen TV, and a maple table for four completes the living area. From this space, guests have access to a terrace complete with comfortable patio furniture and a gas grill. It's an ideal location for barbecuing while savoring the stunning Lake Michigan sunsets. You'll find two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds, and a full bath with a shower/tub combo on this level as well.

On the second level, guests can enjoy another spacious living area with floor-to-ceiling windows offering beautiful lake views and lots of comfortable seating around the flatscreen TV. Another large terrace invites you to enjoy the colorful sunsets, the majestic rising moon, and often the lights of Chicago across the lake. Two bedrooms are housed on this level, both bedrooms furnished with queen beds and en-suite bathrooms with shower/tubs. The lower level has a nice living area with floor-to-ceiling windows. A large private primary suite offers a sitting area, a spacious bedroom with built-in maple closets and an en suite bathroom with double sinks and a shower/tub. A second bedroom with a bathroom with a shower and a laundry room complete this level. The guest house is perfect for children or adults who are still young at heart. This fun red, white, and blue haven has a kitchen and a small eating area. There are two bedrooms with two sets of bunk beds each, a bathroom with a shower, a TV, and a second washer and dryer.

A large terrace, complete with a gas grill, patio furniture, a hot tub, a half bath, and two outdoor showers, separate the Main House from the Guest House. If relaxing on the beach and splashing in the waves is what you enjoy, a 100-foot boardwalk through the dune grass leads you to our association beach. If you need a respite from the beach, there are many interesting activities in Harbor Country to discover: kayaking, surfing, blueberry picking, Sawyer’s beautiful art and sculpture museum, breweries, wineries, farmers’ markets, an ice cream parlor, antiquing, shopping, and many great restaurants. Treat yourself and experience “the Riviera of the Midwest”!

Not bad overall
Great view and location. Handled the 20 of us well. Sliding doors were hard to open, especially for the children. Upper bunks in bunk house were not safe to use. Lots of maintenance/upkeep and deep-cleaning required throughout the property. There were a lot of cob webs outside around doors and deck railings. Decks need attention.

Just wonderful
We were a group of twelve writers on retreat and we had the loveliest stay. Comfortable, quiet, beautiful view, accessible beach for walking, and easy-to-use kitchen. Highly recommend.

Spacious home on the Lake Michigan beach
Our extended family had the bedroom privacy couples wanted as well as multiple living space areas for bonding as a group. While there are many levels and stairs, the main level worked well for those with mobility issues in our group of 20. Great views of the lake and sunset. Easy access to family friendly, sandy beach.

very comfy house. tons of room, a very short walk to a beautiful beach that's private for people in the neighborhood -- it was totally empty for our entire two week stay. well equipped kitchen. more cozy than fancy -- which we totally loved.

Wonderful Beach Getaway
As advertised, this vacation property can house the masses! We had a very large group, and everyone was comfortable with a multitude of bedrooms and bathrooms. This home is especially well-suited for more than one family as sleeping arrangements are separated by floors, and the two bunk rooms are situated in a stand-alone guest house. Also appreciated was the well-stocked beach shed with chairs, umbrellas, a canopy, kayaks, beach toys including frisbees, and any kind of balls you can imagine, kites, life preservers and more. Beach access was perfect and nights around the natural gas powered fire pit on the upper deck, or around a beach bonfire were especially enjoyable. Although this house is older, everything is well-kept and supplied. The owner is obviously making upgrades as the kitchen refrigerator, both dishwashers, the countertop, and sink all seem new. We were grateful for the second refrigerator on the lower level for all of our beverages and overflow of groceries for our large group. Lastly, construction is nearing an end with the property next door. There was no work at all on the weekends and very little noise during the week as it appears that most of the remaining work is within the home. We would highly recommend this home for a relaxing and functional beach getaway vacation for families.

Location
Great location for a wonderful beach vacation. The house was clean, expansive and well equipped. Beach access was fantastic. Two significant problems: 1) there is a lot of deferred maintenance to be done on decking, screens and windows and 2) the lower level bunkhouse meant to accommodate up to 8 children in 2 rooms with 2 bunkbeds in each was burdened by a "septic" odor that was not easily tolerated for all, despite taking all the remedies suggested. It would be better to either solve the problem or not offer the bunkhouse.

Nice Place
Lots of "getaway" areas for a large group-- 3 gathering spaces, 4 outside decks, private uncrowded beach.
