We recently stayed four nights in this beautiful, two-story guest house within walking distance of Sarlat's famous Saturday market. Initially I thought there was a mistake -- that we must have signed up for a home-share and would have roommates -- because the house was so much larger than I had expected. What a happy surprise that it was all ours!
Downstairs is a modern, well-equipped kitchen with a spacious adjoining dining area and living room/seating area. Upstairs are two large bedrooms with comfortable beds and plenty of closet space, as well as a nice, large bathroom. It has a bathtub with a removable, hand-held shower nozzle. (The owner plans to replace the tub soon with a fully enclosed shower, which will be better.)
We visited during a cold spell but the whole house was well heated and comfortable, and everything was clean and nice.
The best part of the house for us was the incredible front porch, opening onto a beautiful, huge front garden! We sat around the table on the porch with our coffee every morning, and then sat there again in the evening, drinking wine and enjoying appetizers (cheeses, sausages, and foie gras from the Saturday market!) before walking a few blocks to dinner. Birdsong filled the air morning and early evening. It was just lovely.
And speaking of lovely, the owner of this property, Dominique, is a wonderful host! A Frenchman who lived in Australia for many years, he speaks great English and was a delight to converse with. He was gracious and helpful, not at all intrusive but absolutely available if you need any information about the town, local sights, French politics and culture, etc. We loved chatting with him in the morning as we headed out for our adventures in the many beautiful towns nearby.
We highly recommend staying at this wonderful, conveniently located home. Enjoy!
