View from the Top of the World
This is a beautiful location set at the top of a small mountain with a few other houses. The view is for real as long as the weather cooperates and you really can see all the way beyond Puntarenas to the Gulf of Nicoya. In fact, we could clearly see a cruise ship entering the strait on our last morning. Just be advised that this is an area approaching the cloud forest so evening fog and clouds can obscure your sunsets. We had two clear evenings out of three, but I don’t know if that rate would hold during the rainy season.
The house easily accommodates six, and we had more room than needed. For couples, turning one room into a living area instead of sleeping quarters would have made it more comfortable for enjoying the evening hours. Of course, those enjoying San Ramon’s night life have less need for that consideration. The road was a little sketchy the first time up because it’s pretty steep and partly gravel. It only took once, though, and driving to town and back quickly became just another drive. There is hot water in the bathrooms, something you don’t always find in CR. We considered it extremely safe and VERY quiet until the spring winds roared through, which was a little disconcerting the first night. There are no laundry services so we washed clothes in the sink and hung them on the clothesline. Mornings are best for drying because there will be sun and a nice breeze. On rainy or particularly humid days that would prove more difficult, but for us it worked. The wifi was consistently available but it did have trouble uploading videos from my camera. We didn’t use tv, so no comment on that. There was a monitor, but I don’t even know if it was for a computer or an actual tv.
The host was responsive, even though she was herself on vacation in the States. She has local folks who can help out and everyone was very responsive to our questions. She even let me play the guitar in the closet. Very cool to find that in the middle of a 2-week trip since I didn’t bring mine along.
So, all in all, we really enjoyed our stay, which led to our liking San Ramon the most of all the CR towns and cities we’ve seen so far. It felt safe, seemed up and coming with a university vibe, and we would definitely look to stay there again. The view alone ensures that.
