Although we were warned that Salvador was a dangerous place, we did not experience anything that made us uneasy. There was a visible police presence that made us feel safe.
If you are from the northern hemisphere, consider bringing a small sun parasol for extended touring on foot; also sunscreen.
You have to be careful as a tourist in Brazil in general. You have to be aware of your surroundings and to not make yourself a target for thieves. Traffic in Salvador is crazy, motor bikes and people are crazy drivers.
