Ryde
Referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Island’ thanks to the hovercraft and Wightlink catamaran linking with Ryde. Possibly the best thing about Ryde is the beautiful miles of unspoilt golden sands. Lined with beach cafes, ice cream pit-stops and plenty of family-friendly entertainment makes this a great holiday destination. Union Street rises up from the Esplanade and is home to many eateries, quirky shops and also provides a great view of the Victorian pier once you have reached the top.
Some of the years biggest events take place in Ryde, including the famous International Scooter Rally on the August Bank holiday where you can’t move for scooters and the smell of two-stroke wafts through the air.
There are more cycle/walking paths than roads so cycling is a great way to get around (if you can manage the hills)
If you don’t have a car you can explore most of the Island by bus. There’s a stop across the road and busses come every few minutes.
