The idea is realized by the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal, which was founded in 2005 by the Swiss Homeland Security.

History & Information
Splügen was characterized by its location at the foot of the Splügenpass, which was already committed by the Romans, for centuries, the transit, which is reflected in the architecture. The tanned Walser houses, the proud palazzi and the mighty Susten are witnesses of this time. Not least because of this, the village was classified by the preservation of monuments as a place of national importance and in 1995 awarded the Wakker Prize, which honors the endeavor to preserve traditional, valuable buildings and intertwine them meaningfully with the present.
The "Susta" is a knotted structure with arbor attached to a pedestal and is located on the old pass road, in the middle of the historic village center of Splügen. It consists of a 600-year-old, five-storey tower house and the hall building that was built 500 years ago. The monument was formerly the living and working house of a Sustmaster, namely the so-called "divisor" of Splügen. Under his supervision was from the 14th to the 19th Century the transported goods of the hawkers who came over the Splügenpass, redistributed for further transport to other hikers. Where once the packed draft animals were unloaded and stowed, where the goods were stored and where the hawkers were housed, during the restoration of the monument in 2010, historical living rooms with contemporary comfort were created. During the restoration, great value was placed on preserving the historical structure. The wall openings through which the horse manure was disposed of in the past were not bricked up, but glazed costly and today give the view of the Stutzbach, which ripples gently past the monument. The living part of the Sustmaster is now restored in accordance with all the rules of historic preservation.
