Nothing special but great location to gay beach
Hotel met expectations and was nothing special. No real shade by the pool, bar/restaurant were usually dead, mostly was a place to sleep and shower. Great location, friendly staff, reasonably priced. Not a destination spot but good to get away from the action.
Old , uncomfortable rooms. No hot water. Internet doesn't work at all in rooms, and barely in lobby. Front Desk Staff can't do anything but apologize. They are essentially just babysitting the building. The manager, Luis is worst of all. Treats you like you are lucky to have the honor of staying there. So bad, I left 2 days early, and went somewhere else!
The Abbey is a perfect location with easy access to the beach and just a few blocks away from all the central strip of bars and restaurants. The place is clean but in need of major repairs. The beds are hard and old (still have springs) and the furniture appears to be the same furniture they've probably had since 1975. It is for this reason alone that the overall rating is low. Simple cosmetic upgrades (TV/Bed/furniture/linings) could bring this little gem up to a 3-4 star hotel.
I loved this hotel at first when I checked in and thought I would stay there next time I travel. The person who checked me in was very friendly and accomodating. The hotel is only a half block of walking to the beach It was great to see an elevator to take me up to the fifth level, other hotels don't have elevators. Great view of ocean even though my room was not for ocean view. Room very clean but found sand residuos on the side walls under the courtins from previous guests. The hotel offers free wifi in the lobby, i was able to reach wifi in my room, nice. My nightmare started when a skinhead guy took over the second shift. He questioned me in a very rude way and said nothing after I said I was a guest in room #. Then he kept browsing in the internet. Not very nice. Next day as I was coming back from the beach the same guy asked me in a rude way to leave the towel with him. I had no idea what he was talking about, never asked for towels, if i did I would expect to be asked nicely. I will probably stay there again I just hope that rude guy is not there any more. Thanx
The staff was extremely friendly. Stayed during off season, much of the area was just opening up for the season including some of the services provided by the hotel. Even so, the staff made every attempt to provide excellenct service. The rooms are large and very comfortable. Some updating needed IE TV's and some of the dishes in the kitchens but overall excellent.
We had a perfect stay. I give the hotel straight 5s considering the price. There are more luxurious places, but not in that neighborhood for that price. Free and good wifi. Super friendly staff. Big, luxurious shower. Floor to ceiling windows on two sides, facing the bay. Two balconies. The only thing that could have been better would have been a more robust air conditioner. The existing was a bit weak, though sufficient.

the poor abbey
the hotel is looking like it needs updating. my room was very small with an air conditioner which only worked on med, not high. tv was fading in and out. not a pleasant experience.
It's a very nice stay, A/C isn't very strong but you get used to it quickly as it's still better than outside for sleeping. Water heat is best mid day (likely solar heating) but this was fine as the max heat was just right considering how hot it was.
The Abbey has passed its prime. It's a lot more run-down compared to the last time we stayed here. Carlos used to be the receptionist at the front desk, but is different now without him. If you're looking for an ok hotel, this is it. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Abbey Hotel Old Town Puerto Vallarta
The Abbey Hotel advertises as a gay hotel in PV. however in relation to other gay hotels close by it is a poor excuse. Staff members don't seem to be aware of events or happenings in the gay community and aren't seen in the community as staff members of other hotels are. There were no gay events or happenings at the hotel itself such as drag or strip shows.
Residents at the hotel are forced to wear an orange wristband as if they were in an all inclusive resort. The beds were hard and the rooms are basic. There is air conditioning but no fridges in the rooms.
Most Staff members were friendly and as helpful
like getting a taxi or telling you how to get to a location within PV
When we arrived I had asked for a room with two beds and an upper floor. The room we were shown only had one bed. I pointed out we had asked for two beds and our room was quickly changed., We were given a fourth floor room of a 7 storey hotel.
It was a turn off to see a couple of younger staff members watching straight porno on the guest computer.
As far as location is concerned it is right in the center of gay life in PV -close to entertainment, restaurants, bars and the beach.

Very Good Value. Will Stay There Again.
Very basic, clean gay hotel. Extremely helpful desk staff. Great location -- a short walk to the gay beach, a 10-minute walk or $3 USD cab ride to the popular gay bars, many good restaurants within blocks. Not luxurious by any means but more than adequate. Wifi in rooms is unreliable, but generally works in the lobby. Contrary to Expedia listing, room rate does not include a breakfast buffet. Hotel manager told me the hotel has NEVER offered a breakfast buffet. Generally, a good deal. I most likely will stay there on my next visit.
Even if you book via Expedia for 2 people, they are fond of charging $25 for guests if you check in alone.
Hot water didn't work for one day.
Elevator works only half the time.
Doors are thin, especially the ones connecting the room next door, when you want to sleep in or don't care to hear the person in the other room vomiting for two days.
This was my second time here. It's getting over-priced for what's offered. I understand "it's Mexico" but after 8 days I wished I had booked a condo somewhere nearby.
Would definitely use this hotel again when I return to Puerto Vallarta
The staff at the Abbey Hotel were very friendly and helpful when requesting excursions. The rooms were unique and inviting, but the bed was a little hard to sleep on, which is something I can overlook because of the overall feel of the atmosphere. The hotel has excellent maid service and kept my room very clean. The hotel setting was in a great location near the beach. I would definitely use this hotel again on my return trip to Puerto Vallarta.
Stayed at The Abbey for a total of five nights. Most of the staff was VERY friendly and helpful. Only one front desk clerk seemed a little miffed if you approached him with a question. One of the waiters in the restaurant shorted me on my change and acted a little gruff the whole time as if waiting on gay people was beneath him. But the rest of the staff, AMAZING. The location is hard to beat, too, right smack in the middle of a great neighborhood- close to bars, cafes, the beach, places to eat. I had a gorgeous view from my balcony. The room was always clean and the maids were very nice. The bed was hard as a rock, but I've come to expect that from hotel beds in Mexico. They're all hard for some reason. I would definately stay here again.
The staff and overall amenities of the Abbey was very appealing. We stayed in a European Suite which was of ample room and had a full size refrigerator, stove, blender, coffee maker. The only negative about the room was the bed. The bed was hard as a rock. Surprisingly, I wasn't sore though each morning of the 7days I spent there. The staff was very accomodating and the breakfast meals were super! The pool is nice; but, the sun exposure is only during peak 11am-2pm. The beach was a short walk. The eateries and bars also were a short walk. The entire stay felt very safe and the locals could not have been more hospitable and patient with the fact that neither of us could speak ANY spanish. We will make this a future destination again.
It was a perfect spot for a first visit to PV. Location was perfect and an easy walk to everything I was interested in seeing and doing. The hotel is adequate and I would probably return just because of the wonderful and helpful service recieved from the desk staff. Try to get an upper floor room. Mine was on a corner with views of the city and the ocean. There is great food, shopping and clubs all around the hotel. The beds are a wee bit hard, but not that bad. Good value and pleasant experience over all.
Overall the hotel was pretty good. The staff is friendly and its in a great location. The only complaint was the the housekeeping staff was talking loud and laughing in the halls early in the morning. This was annoying if you get in late and want to sleep in. However, they were very friendly.
The Abbey Hotel is a older hotel but the rooms are clean and services were great. The front desk was very helpful -thank you Carlos and Sergio. You can walk everywhere from this location, beach shops, places to dine. The wireless is sometimes a problem but they have a computer in the lobby for all to use.
