Inside really nice, outside not so much
This is a beautifully planned and constructed renovation of a seriously old stone building, in a location that is at once in the heart of the district, steps from many of the sites tourists want to see, yet closed away from that noise and hustle in a quaint stone alley.
Downside of that quaint stone alley is that drug addicts and people looking for a hidden place to go to the bathroom hang around much of the day. The crack smokers and otherwise downtrodden didn’t bother us much, in fact on the rare occasions we interacted at all they were more or less deferential, but I imagine some people would be quite frightened by ending up in an alley with them. They congregate outside the lower floor window, which is sealed and barred, but still passes noise and “presence” from outside. Best to enter and exit from the Rua de Saraiva de Carvalho side, less urine and feces there
