Once a Roman town, Poreč was subsequently conquered by the Byzantines and Venetians. In former times it was an important harbor. Today it is one of the most integral Istrian towns and well worth a visit. Poreč is the center of the largest holiday area in Istria and is known as the Riviera of Istria. Aside from the tremendous tourist influence, Poreč has retained its own culture and town spirit, and is recognized, along with others, as an important historical city. The rich tourist tradition, attractive hotels, modern tourist complexes, green forests and Mediterranean vegetation are some of the reasons for its continued tourist development. It is also a haven for athletes. It has a good mix of nightlife which includes a variety of discotheques, bars and dance clubs. While in Poreč you must be sure to visit the old part of town with its important cultural and historical sites which include the Euphrasian Basilica (under the protection of UNESCO). Here you will find some interesting archaeological remains which bear witness to the population density of this town even in prehistoric times. The remains of forums and temples reveal the importance of the Roman presence in the area. In Poreč you will feel the old spirits and discover traces of great cultures which are visible on every step of the old town with its narrow streets. Poreč also has the Cove Baredine, a natural cove with endemic amphibian species. From Poreč you can take excursions to Rovinj which has been a cultural landmark since 1963, or to the Limski Channel. On a boat trip you can visit the Brijuni Islands National Park. Additional trips can be made to Pula and Medulin, both well-known tourist centers and holiday resorts, and to the Peninsula Cape, a large and protected nature area.
