Little House in the Big Woods- Tennis Court

Imagine staying in a house in Colonial Williamsburg, or OldSturbridge Village. The Little House at Jericho is an early American historic pre-1800 guesthouse behind my farmhouse located on the Abington side of Pomfret, Connecticut, in a secluded storybook location on 145 acres of preserved land adjacent to the Airline Trail, the Wolf Den State Forest, Mashomoquet State Park and the New England Forestry Foundation's Chase Kimball Memorial Forest. This nature preserve is suitable for bird-watching from the deck over-looking the pond or at the Audubon Society's Grasslands preserved sanctuary nearby, for long walks on the private trails in the woods (with direct access to the Airline Trail), cross-country skiing, tennis on the court, fishing in either or both of two ponds, or just for a place to get away from it all in a private nature sanctuary. Use of the tennis court is allowed, but hunting is strictly prohibited, as is use of any off-road vehicles. It is ideal for an artist or writer’s retreat.

The Little House is a unique historic property that has been lovingly preserved by eight generations of the same family who have lived at Jericho since 1814. It is the birthplace of the famous industrialist and philanthropist, Augustus Sabin Chase, of Waterbury Connecticut fame (see Waterbury Hall of Fame, where he, his son, and one of his granddaughters are honored). This antique house has one slightly larger downstairs and two small upstairs bedrooms, a spacious living/dining room with a huge granite fireplace, and can sleep up to four people. Furnished with period country antiques, guests feel transported into the 18th century, until they slide back a door to find a modern kitchen with a view over an orchard and pond from a large deck, and an updated bathroom. It is not suitable for the disabled or for very large people, because it is a pre-1800 house with small period furnishings and is not wheelchair-accessible.

The house is hypo-allergenic, and bedsheets are 100% cotton, laundered at high temperatures and ironed. Therefore, no pets or smoking are permitted.

Jericho is situated close to Pomfret and Rectory Schools, Woodstock Academy and half an hour from Marianapolis Prep School, as well as close to the numerous scenic drives, destination restaurants, antique stores and boutiques in Windham County. This historic little house is nestled in the forest, at the end of a long straight dirt town road , far from the stress of daily life, but with private trails to hike and only a short drive from Old Sturbridge Village and Mystic Seaport. It is also close to the Connecticut Audubon Center’s Grasslands Sanctuary, Pomfret Forest (NEMBA-maintained mountain biking destination), Goodwin Conservation Center in Hampton and several state parks and forests ideal for hiking and bicycling. It is less than an hour's drive from Hartford, Providence and Worcester and only a 20 minute drive from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Boston is 90 miles Northeast and New York City 150 miles Southwest.

Quiet Getaway
We had a nice time visiting the Little House. The home was clean and full of beautiful historic items plus it had plenty of the basics like toilet paper, kitchen items, etc which was very continent. The trails in the backyard were our favorite. They were wide and well maintained. Our daughter quickly found several favorite reading spots and enjoyed exploring each day that we were there. Thank you Eliza for your hospitality!

No smoke Alarms !! No Ac except for one smallest bedrooms.
The owner was on property, we were to read a book to find the key. She asked us repeatedly to move are cars we had two! She has a huge circle driveway. I left Wednesday as I had obligations, she informed me she was to. “I hope it’s clean” i found her to be condescending. As my stepson has a disability where he cannot speak and choose pretty rude about it. About his ability to be toilet trained like he was a dog. The Wednesday I left, she called my husband and asked him to move his car up. Wouldn’t it be logical she said.! She had Backhoe digging one night from 5 o’clock on till about eight thankfully it rained the next few days. She had nanny Kim’s everywhere inside and out. We had a deck she put a little pop-up. We are two or three chairs in a little table could fit under.. the 24” inch tv was in a tall cabinet on the opposite end of the room! She didn’t want us to move the furniture so we were expected to sit and watch the TV sideways. If I had my grandchildren there, it would’ve been horrible. Bamboo chairs, everything was so breakable old! I love antiques, but I do not have guest sit on them. both myself and my husband found her to be rude. She would go out and mow knowing we were there. We couldn’t use the front door. We only had one access. This was a total horrible place to stay at..

The Little House is a Big Experience
Birdsong, surrounded by natural beauty, a nearby pond's frogs singing us to sleep, the low-ceiling, raftered, wide-board-floor experience of living in an 18th century house, The Little House offered two city dwellers a quiet, unique way to spend our vacation!

This was our second stay at the little house. We love how quiet it is, and how easy it is to get to Putnam, Brooklyn, Thompson etc. Any driving we need to do is scenic and beautiful! The property itself is very peaceful especially at night.

This is a lovely historic house in a beautiful location. The house is charming and comfortable and is surrounded by relaxing peaceful countryside. We would be very happy to stay again. Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time to explore the trails through the woods.

lovely stay in the woods
The four of us has a lovely stay. The setting is wonderful. Ski and snowshoe right off the back. All the amenities one needs, while maintaining a rustic feel. Agree with other reviews that folks over 6' need to watch their heads, as the ceilings in some parts of the house are low. We would stay there again for sure!

Lovely weekend retreat
So enjoyed our stay at the “Little House.” The home was just charming, especially if you like antiques and historic building. We loved exploring the trails out back even though it was a chilly January weekend. Loved meeting the hens and “Hammer” the beagle, too. Eliza was a wonderful host!

a great weekend away
We had a lovely stay at this house. Eliza made check-in very easy and was nearby in case we needed anything, but also let us do our own thing. The house itself was comfortable and had everything we needed. The kitchen is a little small to do any extensive cooking and it took some coordination for us both to work in there at the same time, but it worked and has all the basics. The bathroom is nicely renovated - someone put real thought into how to provide modern amenities while fitting in with the antiques in the rest of the house. To echo what others have said, the age of the house gives it wonderful charm and a unique stay, but also may not make it the best choice for everyone. We found it very comfortable and had no problems, but tall people might have some challenges due to both the ceiling height and the scale of the furniture (a bit smaller than today's scale). For short people like myself, it was kind of nice! There are trails right from the house itself, although we only explored them a little bit. We choose to hike in several nearby parks instead, which are all nice, too. Although we were really in the woods, it wasn't that far to find some good food (Anya is upscale and is serving on the patio and inside now; at Heirloom Food Company, they bring the food to your car, but let you eat at tables outside; Airline Grill is closer and has tasty burgers (real & Impossible)). We also really appreciated Eliza's communication and flexibility when much of the state lost power just before we were originally scheduled to visit. Although we did need to reschedule, her proactive & clear communication made that process smooth. Finally, I was a little concerned when I first heard the guinea fowl -- they can be loud when they aren't happy. However, we only heard them when we were going to and from the house and occasionally in the middle of the day, not early in the morning as I feared. So, in the end, they were amusing and not a problem. We recommend this place & hope you enjoy your visit!

Wonderful getaway in a rural setting
Perhaps the longest-lasting memory will be sitting on the large deck immersed in nature, relaxing to the sounds and smells of this wonderful enclave. The house is well-appointed, from the beautiful19th-century period furniture down to the little details like shower soap, extra bedding, or dish towels. If you are 6''3 or taller, as I am, one of the upstairs bedrooms will be a better fit than the "Master" bedroom downstairs. Eliza is an extremely gracious host. She was very responsive and made sure we had everything we needed. She even provided a dozen fresh eggs from the chickens roaming the property along with six guinea fowl - adorable creatures, albeit not the smartest ones around.

Amazing property and magnificent home. It was very interesting with all the history and so much work into keeping it original. Birding and Biking paradise
We had a wonderful long weekend here in the big woods. The birding is fantastic in spring. We logged many migrating warblers and there is a surprising diversity of birds, due to the many ponds and waterways visible from the Airline bike trail. The house was comfortable and cozy at night and immersed in the feeling of the outdoors during the day, especially enjoyed the trail around the pond and the sunny deck in the morning! We are definitely coming back!

Our family spent treasured time together living in complete serenity at the Little House! We felt like we were staying in a museum with all the period-piece furnishings and special touches, instead of a vacation rental. Eliza definitely shared a special place with us and showed us how important we were to her as well. She made sure every detail and needs of ours was taken care of.

Hidden gem
The Little House in the Big Woods was just perfect for our weekend getaway. We needed to spend some time with our teenage son away from all distractions. The house takes you back in time and it was comfortable and clean! We enjoyed sitting on the beautiful deck overlooking the property, pond and woods. Our son fished in the pond and we hiked around the property and the woods. Eliza was a wonderful host and attentive to our needs. We wish we had more time to spend at the house and in Pomfret. We would definitely recommend this home.

Colonial cottage near the woods
Very enjoyable, comfortable little house! Eliza, our super host, was fantastic. She had our refrigerator stocked as well as many other necessities one may need. (Wifi and Roku too!) The cottage is like an early american Sturbridge village home but with an updated kitchen and bathroom From the large deck we enjoyed the views of the pond and woods and walked on the paths around the property. Eliza's house is next door but the way everything is situated it still felt secluded, peaceful and private. We would definitely go back to the little house in the woods!

Authentic Antique Cottage
We had a wonderful time in Pomfret at 'The Little House". We hiked to the Wolf's Den, went antiquing in Putnam, visited a gorgeous chapel at The Pomfret School, attended a wonderful festival at Roseland and ended our stay with a magical evening at The Golden Lamb Buttery. I would recommend a visit to "the quiet corner" any time of year!

Away-from-it-all cottage with delightful grounds and access to historic towns
We loved spending time at the cottage, which dates from the 18th century (I think), and has been in the owner's family for many generations. The back deck overlooks woods, a pond, and lawns with old fruit trees. Inside, the cottage is like a very elegant house in miniature -- and with real antiques. We stayed only for a long weekend, but the quiet of the place rejuvenated us and made us feel we had really been "away." Also, we really enjoyed the private tennis court, set amid trees and grass.
